Suggestions for New Reel

I want to buy a new spinning reel for flounder fishing. I have an ugly stick 6'2" medium action rod, and want to get a stronger reel. Most of my fishing takes plce from the beach, and eventually from boats (though i have another reel for lighter action). This i plan top be a heavy action reel, with about 120-130yds cap for lines over 8lbs.
If anyone can help suggesting a rod around 100-150$ it would be great, maybe a little more if its worth it.
Thanks for everything

Re: Suggestions for New Reel

hi sponxx im from the UK and am not entirely clear on the circumstances for flounder fishing in your country. There are a few members on here who have travelled half the world fishing and so you may get a good reply.
If not can you elaborate a bit more as this will enable me to make some suggestions.
You mentioned the neccesary line capacity, are you intending using the new rod onshore aswell as in a boat? How big do the flounder grow out there? (we have a different species here which is a lot smaller growing to a max of about 6lb). How heavy are the spinners used? etc.

Re: Suggestions for New Reel

Flounders here may grow up as big 16lbs, although its not usual to find them. Those are the kid you take pictures of, hehehe. Another one we find too (and which maybe be caught is the "corvina" - Cilus gilberti - which in some cases can be 40lbs. Those are not regular sizes but not unsual to find either.
When we fish the beaches the casting shots are usually around 25-30m into the water. The reel will MAINLY be used from the beach, but could be used in a boat too (not as frequently). The line i will be using shouldn't be over 16# test and around 150yds as said.
I hope this serves as good info on what to buy. i was thinking about the Penn SS 6500
or the Shimano Thunnus TU 6000F or the SA 5000FD (though there is a big price difference)
Lures will be rapalas/bomber minnows or even spoons, my favorite
Bomber Heavy Duty Jointed Long A (B16J) weigh 1oz 6" length (my killer lure for flounder)
Thanks for the help.

Re: Suggestions for New Reel

fantastic - sounds great!
ok - I use a shimano 4000gt for most plugging work. Loaded on this is 10lb line - the advantage of this reel aside from the very strong shimano gearing (despite being a rear-drag reel) is that it features a fighting drag aswell so if you do meet that monster you can release line or indeed tighten up on the fish immediately and adjust the tension using just your thumb thus not at all distracting you from fighting the fish!
However, because you are using up to 16lb bs line your other option could be to look at the shimano baitrunner gt. A 6000GT can haul in 40lb+ carp so no problems there! You will also have plenty of line capacity for using higher breaking strain lines. I have a 6000gt filled with 15lb line and this is used for rough ground bass fishing when you need a bit of grunt but still want to keep things as light as possible.
Im afraid I dont know enough about the Penn reels to offer judgement though mate.

Hope you find what you are looking for- let us know when you buy one!
