Ben if you use booms on the traces they will ensure that the hooks are pinned to the bottom. this is fine as long as you are not being plagued by crabs!

Re: best way of catching flatties ??

White plastic spoons from the supermarket, handles broken off and a small hole melted through the stump with a hot needle. Thread this on the line above the beads (I use 6 alternate red/yellow) or tie it to the side bit of a 3 way swivel and use the rest of the swivel as normal. The spoon flaps around in the tide as an attractor and if the tide is strong it will drag a round lead along the bottom so you cover an arc. If you fish the tide out the flatties will become concentrated in the gulleys, the best places I found are the sloping sides of the deep channels outside harbours, my guess is that they wait here for food to tumble down as the tide goes out. Ragworm has always worked best for me, you can collect small harbour rag at low tide and they survive well in a bucket of sea water, hook a bunch of them because they are very small. Fine wire aberdeen hooks size 1/0. Good luck.

How light a ball weight would you recommend Steve? Something like 6gm or less maybe?
