Flounder Bashing - Report River Taw 21/11/04

Flounder Bashing - River Taw 21/11/04

The day started a 4am and I met old Smoothound at the services so that we could share a car down to the River Taw

We made great time and were soon in the car park of the Heanton Court Hotel (which is currently closed). Still being dark we got are head lamps on and had a walk along the selected mark. All was looking very good plus the rain had stopped

About 20mins later the boys arrived and with a little bit of banter we moved our cars to the end of the car park were the path leads down to the estuary (this is muddy and a gentle slope) with a brisk and excited walk along the road at the bottom of the path we were there.

We spread out into our pegs and then set about digging for maddies. Being super fit guys we dug like JCB,s and managed to get about 50 worms ( OK we dug like very unfit men with fags hanging out of our mouths saying a few selected words like “ oh isn’t this hard ect )

The Shore line

So with the bait we had bought with us and the few maddies it was game on
Bait
Rag worm
Maddies
Squid
Clams
Rigs
Old smoothounds wishbone, size 2 Aberdeen’s with beads and sequins

The tide was still to turn and the mark we were fishing was that of a gulley running at our feet about 50yds wide at pace

Talis and me

We soon had to switch to 5-6oz gripe leads as the current was strong plus there was a lot of weed trees ect coming through , but this where kiwimarty did us proud and did his very utmost to collect all the weed he could on is line . What a hero

Nimus4 looking like a pro

Then out came the stove, bacon and egg rolls were soon prepared by smoothy which went down a treat

The tide turned and about 1hr 45 mins to high tide, old Smoothound caught the first flounder. The pace of the water let off and with the estuary now filling the weed started to slacken off

Pross all set up and ready to go

The bights were slow and in all I think about eight were caught 4 by smoothy and the rest all very small spread between us

The day was great and there is nothing better than meeting up with great guys having a good chat and loads of banter whilst fishing and topped of with bacon rolls and a bottle of beer

Tip when fishing - this mark is very muddy so welly‘s are a must and a change of clothing for the drive home

Massive thanks to Old Smoothound for organising this and to everyone who came out to fish

Kiwimarty thinking ( I hope )

Post Re: Flounder Bashing - Report River Taw 21/11/04

Hi all,

What a day out we forum peeps had down on the Taw at Barnstaple. Sleepy eyed me and the proffessor met up drove down to the Taw in double quick time. The rest of the crew arrived. Talis, Pross, Wellyfish, Kiwimarty. Then we got digging....Even Wellyfish dug some bait!!

All set up and ready to fish all the peeps got their Old Smoothy flounder rigs. Rag maddies squid clams went on hooks.... even a secret little concoction i made went into a swim feeder

Trouble was the river had come up a bit from previous few days rain and all sorts of muck was coming down. The water was not as clear as it usually is, but the muck was ably collected by Kiwi Marty and Wellfish so the rest of us had less branches to dodge! It was tough going.

Having had an early start for most of us, so we fired up the Hi Gear stove, bacon and rolls courtesy of Wellyfish, eggs courtesy of Kiwi Marty, we even had HP to go on em. Luvvly bacon rolls then followed by egg ones. MMmmm...... food or fish

Nimue4 came later on ...damn he missed out on the bacon and Egg rolls.

I was lucky on the day had a couple of nice flounder for KiwiMarty's fridge plus another 3 or 4 smaller ones later in the day.

We all had a great time, meeting up with peeps who have now turned out to be really good friends from the forum. As Marty said, if it wasn't for the forum we would never have met. So a big thanks to all who came and a big thanks to Richard for providing such a great medium to talk and meet with other like minded fishing peeps.

And not forgetting Wellyfish for providing the bottle of champers.... numerous chockie truffles and laughs.

Next meet......??????????? to be posted.
