Re: Flounder On The Teign

Good luck in obtaining the crabs, with the weather we are haviing at the moment it will be hard going to get the peelers in time for the competition. ive got to start crabbing this weekend and freezing some back just in case.

i think that one will be the national flounder championships..

its good and worth fishing if you know the area.. but from experience if you dont know the river well your wasting your time... and get there damn early if you want one of the good spots...

i dont know too much but luke can clarify with me ...

it seems the netherton area produces big flounder from time to time you just have to find your way down to the river!!!

Re: Flounder On The Teign

Every year the winning fish has come from different parts of the river, last year alot of big ones were caught down the lower side but thats because they flounder had only just moved into the river.

I have caught my biggest flounder from netherton i caught two within two casts, one 3 1/2 and one 3lb which made my day. the bigger fish do tend to stay up the higher parts of the river, but the british record was previously caught down gravel point and now from the gasworks which is considerably lower. Netherton is only a small walk away, you can drive down if you are early enough and its only a small walk, otherwise if the tide isnt too high you can park at coombe celleres and walk around until you get to the point at netherton, which produces the better fish!!

I never fish the shore in this comp as we have a boat and you can move places but i always end up at flow point where we always end up catching a fish that will do quite well, my old man won teh comp with a fish up there and i also have caught fish upto the 3lb mark.

i tend to disagree with you when you say you need to know the river, i have seen too many people just cast a worm or a crab out and catch a decent fish. the problem many people have is they over cast, the fish will be in close on the crab pots and i have caught more fish within 50yards.

Re: Flounder On The Teign

:O maybe i was casting to far... a couple of times i got stuck in the mud at the other side perhaps i will scale down and use the carp rod instead another thing luke....

have you ever seen anyone float fish the higher stretches for flounder?... it works great in the harbour cos u cover far more ground plus u have that moving bait to attract something..

i was wondering if up as far as netherton where the river narrows the flow can be next to nothing at high tide (with no flood water) and u could trot a float down there with no problem..

however we use ragworm in the harbour... im not sure how well it would work with crab and i dunno if worm work in the teign?
