breeding maggots

there are no tackle shops close to my home so i find it hard to get to them so i was thinking instead of going there to buy maggots, breed maggots myself. (i know it sounds a bit sick)

i am currently testing it by putting cat food outside and waiting for flies to lay eggs on them, i know they will because on really hot days, they always do it because they have done it before.

1. do u think it will work?
2. do flies eggs hatch into maggots?
3. do u have any easier ideas of breeding maggots?

Re: breeding maggots

breeding maggots - God this takes me back

Well first of all make sure you have life insurance as you partner / mother might not see the funny side in breeding maggots ( trust me I know )

Well its been millions of years since I did it but I used hearts from the butch then put them under a hedge near our compose heap and leave

I can not remember how long it was before the eggs turned to maggots but think it was about five days ish

The I would look at the maggots - what I was looking for was the black dot / sack inside the maggot and if a nice size then I would riddle the maggots off

As said above its got to be 25 years since I have done it but it was worth it then as a skint kid .

Re: breeding maggots

Don't leave em too long or they turn into casters *icki* and then flys again....as discovered by hubby when some 'escaped' after a trip in his car boot!

Chasin flamin blue bottles out for about a week after that and the kids freaked out too!

Re: breeding maggots

If you're in a hurry go collect some road kill. You can see the skin moving when the maggots are big enough, yeuch. I read somewhere years ago that if you hang a dead rabbit/duck from a tree over a pond the maggots fall out like a swimfeeder for days, then you come and fish there. Never tried this, not sure how my local lakes wardens would react, probably accuse me of Witchcraft.
