Lures Fishing basics - my way

Lure fishing

My favourite way of spending a couple of hours fishing for pike

Lure
  • Basically an artificial fish made from many types of materials (plastic wood ect)
  • There is a massive range of lures on the market ones to like Rapala
  • Don’t just buy a lure because you like the look of it, read the description on the box as it will tell you what depth and style of fishing it is to be used for (people say lures catch more people than fish sometimes)
  • One quick tip is to flatter the barbs on the trebles as this helps when un hooking a pike, and as long as you keep pressure on the fish whilst playing it , the trebles will not come un hooked
Lures – the way I use them

The picture below is how I use a lure whilst fishing along a riverbank

It’s the basic clock method – start at 9 o’clock (casting three to four times) and then cast to 10 o’clock and so on

Vary your speed whilst retrieving your lure – a fish in trouble does not swim at a steady speed

Whilst retrieving remember to give the rod a quick flick (this help to twitch the lure)

Question Re: Lures Fishing basics - my way

I joined the forum to find out the basics of Pike fishing, and found this thread in 20 secs...beautiful!

But...I need to further advice...

I have all the equipment, apart from the lures and plugs.
I intend to try my hand at Pike fishing for the 1st time at a "special" spot on Lake Coniston. What should I look for to buy in terms of lures/plugs to get me going?

Cheers.

Re: Lures Fishing basics - my way

Hi and welcome to the forum

What you need to think about before buying a lure are

The depth of the water — if shallow or full of weed 3-4 feet then a floating lure is best as you can control the lures depth easily i.e if you stop reeling the lure will surface (this is my favourite type of lure)

If the depth is 10-20 feet then you will need a diving lure to get down there and find the pike

Colour of the water - if very coloured then you might want to get a lure that rattles!! - basically there are small beads inside and whilst reeling in the lure sends out vibrations that the pike pick up (pike have sensors on its head that pick up vibration) Helps them find fish in trouble

Colour of the water - if very clear and fishing in good day light then think of using dark coloured lures as you must remember fish hunt by site as well - A dark lure is very visible for a fish looking upwards

What fish are in the water you are fishing - roach / trout / dace and so on. It is point less fishing with a lure that looks like a big fat trout if there has never been one in the water (not totally true as pike will hit anything if very hungry)

Follow the wind, if its been blowing in one direct for a few days then the bank that the wind has been hitting will hold a lot of natural food that small fish will be feeding on and the pike will be below them

Take time out and just sit on the bank and see were the fish are surfacing or jumping being chased by a pike - as soon as you see it cast over the spot and reel in

Ask the anglers on the bank what they have seen - most of them have been there hours before so will tell you if a pike has been in there swim or they have seen a pike on the feed

Ask your local tackle dealer what sells

Do not forget that pike can be at your feet - So start at 9 o'clock (clock method)

Please Please treat all pike with respect and return them

Well there is a little bit of info hope it makes abit of sense

My lure favourite is a floating rattler or you could try a wobblers (real fish rigged as a lure) buts that's for another thread

Re: Lures Fishing basics - my way

I think I just learned a money saving lesson, don't just buy a lure because I like the look of it (wasted alot of money last year on stupid lures ).
