Re: Brown trout

I used to live in Cornwall where I had a small trout stream runnning at the bottom of our hill, and I used to always have a few wild brown trout in the freezer for my breakfasts.

I used to catch them by attaching a piece of worm on a size 16 or 14 hook and letting the current take it down stream with just a couple of small shot on the 2 or 3lb line, then slowly retrieving it. It looked a bit like a small leach or something similar swimming against the current.

If I used maggots on a small stick float I mainly caught small dace but by using the worm method I always seemed to catch Brown Trout.

Have you thought about trying to learn how to cast a fly? I bought a fly rod and reel years ago with the intent of learning to use it properly, but I still haven't tried it yet; maybe I might have a go at learning how to cast a fly next year if I can find someone with a lot of patience willing to show me how.

Thumbs up Re: Brown trout

Most brown trout fishing is over for the season now on uk rivers
The best methods are wet fly fishing with a nymph or wet fly such as a butcher , greenwell glory , alexandria
Also dry fly is good but takes a lot more practise required
Most brown trout i catch are with my own hand built spinning lures
like my size 2 solid brass spinner
Worms are also great too
Brandling worms are best
You can buy wax worms ( Moth Grubs )
from well stocked tackle shops
If you fly fish buy a double tapered floating fly line at first Easiest to use
Best nylon is Maxima in my opinion
When fishing wet flies cast upstream & gently pull the line back towards you as the line floats down stream with the flies & let the line you pull back lie at your feet in a neatish pile
Follow your line downstream with your rod tip & gently lift & drop the rod slowly to work the flies ( make them look alive )
Hope this helps a little

Re: Brown trout

Brown trout seem to favor small worms but I have caught them on maggots and wax worms. I caught several nice tiger trout in the last 2 years. Tiger trout are a cross between a brown and a brook. They are in my opinion much stronger than any other trout and seem to not die very easy.

I got a 22 inch 4 pound tiger 10 pm at night in a river creek using a half a crawler on a size 6 bait holder hook with a bobber! Its the first and only fish I ever got mounted! What a beautiful fish and a tremendous fighter! i caught 4 smaller ones three years ago all on worms! I never have seen many tiger trout before but maybe I did not know what they were till someone told me!
