Question 40yrd leaders of 8lb test? yes or no? how?

I lived in the caribbean for a while and I'm gearing up to go back on holz and I intend to re-visit all the big fish that got away when I lived there. So Im eBaying my way through and getting a bunch of gear...

A lot of the fishing I will be doing will require at least 15lb test. However I remember some spots that I snorkelled in that held small snapper, maybe about 1lb in size - would be great fun on 8lb test. I was wondering - would it be wise to take my reel of 15lb test and attach, say, 40 yards of 8lb test? I see on eBay many spools of 100m. Not enough to fill the size of reels i have, (not that theyre huge reels but as you probably know, 8lb test is thin and 100m isn't incredibly long) and I don't want to have to buy another reel! If so, what kind of knot should I use to attach it? Clearly I don't want the knot to snag the cast, or to snag in the eyes if i needed to let a fish run!

help plz!

Dave

Hi Dave, there are 2 knots you could use that I can think of, the water knot or the blood knot.

I can't explain how to do it, but this could help you to see how it's done

Thanks! I just practiced it and it worked a treat. However, does anyone know if it is wise or not to actually have that knot for a 40 yard leader? Will I risk breaking the knot as the tension of a running fish drags it through the eyes of the rod?

I am just taking a wild guess that it they use that knot for fly fishing, it should be strong enough that it wont come apart.
