How To Properly Sink Line?

Hi guys.

I do lots of canal float fishing. Recently the weather has not been as still as I would like and my float has been zooming off out of the area I have baited up.

Is there a proper way to sink line, i.e putting your rod in the water and reeling in or will the wind just take the float no matter what?

Thanks

Re: How To Properly Sink Line?

I always over cast when float fishing then slightly whip the tip in the water and reel in slightly until the line has sunk.
My dad used to pour washing up liquid on his spools to sink his line, never tried it myself

Re: How To Properly Sink Line?

Tried this many times, doesn't seem to work for me lol.
Maybe I am just using cheap line. Seems like I am.

Re: How To Properly Sink Line?

The line stays on the top by the surface tension of the water ( same as how the little bugs walk on water).
Washing up liquid or any other soap weaken the surface tension and allow the line to sink easier.
If you apply grease (what soap breaks down) to the line it helps it float.

Re: How To Properly Sink Line?

If you use the washing up liquid makes sure you monitor the effects on your line as I have heard it also weakens it

Thanks guys!
Will this not harm/put off the fish in any way though?

Most washing up detergent is environmentaly friendly plus it will be heavily diluted so it shouldnt make any difference

Re: How To Properly Sink Line?

Thank you!

Actually before doing anything, I need a new reel. My arm snapped off today and there's no way of repairing it as I dropped half the bits and bobs in the canal!
