| Re: where to fish. It depends on the type of fish you are after together with a combination of many other things such as the air and water temperatures, the type of baits you are using and how the bait is presented to them and the light conditions and the time of day, and other things. I would normally begin fishing for them on the bottom untill I can see signs of them feeding higher up in the water. How much line I have lying on the bottom depends on the fish I am after; for example; for Tench or Bream I would fish hard on the bottom approx 3 to 5 inches overdepth but for Roach I would fish with the bait just tripping the bottom or an inch or two above the bottom, and with Rudd or Carp I would fish anywhere from on or near the surface right down to the bottom. Get into the habit of plumbing the depth of your swim accurately and feeding little and often and then adjusting your feed depending on whether you are getting bites ‘on the drop’ or hard on the bottom. If you feed some loose maggots ‘little and often’, for example 6 to a dozen maggots every one, two or three minutes in the same spot you should start to get regular bites eventually. If you start to get bites on the drop you can slightly increase your loosefeed which will sometimes get them searching for maggots on the bottom again. If your bites start to slow down then you will need to either increase or decrease your loose feed, keeping them competing for your feed without overfeeding is the key. It’s a try-it-and-see situation first of all.
