| Re: Maggots Pinkies: Pinkies are very often a much better choice especially where the normal sized maggot is used a lot; they are also a brilliant choice in the colder months. Use either singly on a size 20 or 22 hook or in multiples on a size 18 to 20 hook. Most fish will take them and Bream especially seem to like them. I normally take Pinkies as well as a few normal sized maggots but make sure that you hook them lightly in the skin to keep them lively. When I used to captain our team a few years ago and we needed to catapult pinkies out quite a distance after Bream shoals over our groundait we often used a sticky powder called 'Sticky Mag' to bind them into a ball and keep them together until they landed in the water. They won us many a match especially on waters where normal sized maggots where used a lot. Squatts: Squatts are very small maggots and are much smaller than Pinkies. They are usually used for loosefeed and are usually sold with a sprinkling of brick dust to help them sink faster. An old tip worth remembering is to sieve away the brick dust and anything else that they are in, then dip a small slice of bread in some milk and place it on top of the squatt then put them in the fridge overnight. In the morning you will find them whiter, plumper, fresher and more active, making them an even better loosefeed, and at the same time they will also sink well. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

| Re: Maggots Good thread Liver and chicken are the ideal meats for gaining your own maggots. To get the larger maggots you need to store the liver/chicken in the dark (under a bush for example) This will give you better success as the Blue Bottle fly prefers the dark/shade, after a couple of days you should notice the small white eggs, wrap the meat in news paper and store in a dark place. after a few days you should have some juvinile maggots, and after a few more days depending on the temperature some nice white soft mature maggots. Chichen and Liver leave very little mess I would still say it was better to buy the maggots Darrell |
