am i doing something wrong...

Hi all,

been out to my local 4 acre lake again today and once again caught sod all.

today i was float fishing the bottom by an over hanging island tree on maggot or sweetcorn and a method feeder in deeper water on a hair rig with tuti fruiti small boilies and sweetcorn.

sparce but frequent hallibut/corn/broken boilie ground baite.

the think that bothers me is i don't seem to be doing anything wrong, the lake is small and quiet and privatly fished.

Should i try a different lake and try the same set ups to test my technique or try something new. or do i need to spend the day with one of you salty sea dogs to show me the ropes.

I am am new to this lark and wanna catch something all be it small or big, just something.

any ideas or comments..

cheers steve

tonge mill pond. stocked with carp but i have only caught a roach about 6 inches long..

tonge has not been fished hardly and has been offered out to a private sydicate, which i have joined for £100 a year for unlimited access. i do wonder just how well stocked it is..

Re: am i doing something wrong...

you see the odd fat old carp jump now and again, and when you feed the ducks you normally get half a dozen 5-6 lb carp nicking the bread.

mainly carp, the odd roach and poss thats it...

I would spend some time just watching , put some bait in the margins at night ( so the ducks dont see it going , check in the mornings to see if its gone , it may be that there is not much stock in there

Re: am i doing something wrong...

If you are sure that there are 5lb Carp nicking the bread when the ducks are being fed, try a sunken crust (nowerdays called a Zig-Rig) just below the surface on the downwind side of the water, It immitates a sodden crust that is starting to sink; and the ducks can't home in on it so easily as the ducks can't see it unless they are near to it. You can also sink it further out of sight if a duck swims near with a turn of the reel handle and raise it up to just below the surface (or actually on the surface) again once the duck has passed.
(See the rig on the right in the Diagram below)

No I definately don't know it all, I wish I did; it's just because I'm so old and decrepid & I have tried a lot of things in the last 50 years. A lot of which has been unsuccessful.
