| I'm thinking of enhancing my fishing tackle and have been looking at getting a pola after seeing a guy next to me catch a 16lb carp on one. Where do I start? What type do I get? Is a pole & whip the same thing? Is it easy to use? Any other helpful hints and tips would be most welcome. Budget is limited ![]() __________________ Men and fish are alike. | hi minibarrow, the pole your looking at on ebay is ok as a starter but i would go for the 8m version not the 5mtr one i bought an 8m one for my daughter she has had carp to 7lb on it i found hers cheaper at my local tackle shop than ebay once you add on p&p . I would advise you to change the bush at the tip, the elastic and fit a winder bung at the base if you get the pole from a tackle shop they can do all this for you if you are unsure about it but there are plenty of articles on the web about how to do this its quite easy to do. I would suggest a bush for size 16 elastic , fitting pole with middy hi-viz 10-12 (pink) elastic through the top two, and a winder bung (this allows you to tension/soften the elastic depending on fish size). as for rigs i would buy a ready tied one from the tackle shop tell them where you plan to fish and they can advise you on a pattern to use. when you start with a pole it takes a few trips to get used to it but dont give up remember a few pointers; dont strike like you do with a rod and line a gentle lift will do , dont hold the pole upright when playing a fish it will break...keep it low and at a slight angle to the fish top sections have been lost when the pole is pionted directly at a decent fish when playing it, if more pressure needs to be put on a fish (to keep it away from a snag for example) put the tip under water let the elastic do the work. Whips are not usaully elasticated and are fished 'to hand'. hope this helps minibarrow if i can help out with anything else let me know good luck and tight lines Dave |
