Hooking Maggots

Hooking maggots the right way can be a key to catching more fish.

Better bait presentation is a key factor for fishing as most of you know. For maggots to look best, you want them to wriggle like crazy!

The WRONG thing to do is to hook them through the belly, this pierces them and all there guts come out and they won't wriggle very much at all.

The BEST thing to do is to hook them through there breathing holes. When you look at a maggot you'll see a kind of groove at the top and there there are 2 black dots that look like eyes. But they're actually for there breathing. If you put the hook through there they will wriggle a lot and you won't have pierced there body.

This is a key to better bait presentation!!

Re: Hooking Maggots

Hook one maggot through the tag at the back end of the maggot. This become pretty obvious if you look.

To avoid line twist though hook one through the back and one through the head. The wiggly one will attract the fish. If you fish both through the tail the line will quickly twist like mad on the retreive and will tangle.

See , some tips are from the stone age, he he!

Re: Hooking Maggots

i had luck with a size 12 hook and a couple of maggots. when using a large hook i always put one maggot on the shank by pushing the point from one end of its body through to the other and another through the breathink holes to wriggle. had pretty much everything except the smaller fish

Re: Hooking Maggots

Maggots are a great bait and cheap! I hook 4 or 5 on size hook and catch all kinds of fish especially trout and crappie! They stay on the hook way better than wax worms! i was jigging a few maggots with a bober and cauight a 22 inch channel cat last year!
