having waded thru a fw sites etc i think i finally understand the differences in the lines etc but still a little unsure and would like a few more experienced folks to poss point me in the right direction please i only have to basic rods one float one feeder. at the min they have the standard cheap lines that came in the deal. i understand about hook lengths and stuff and was thinking about this for the set up all on mono float 3 or 4 lb main line with a 2-2.5lb hook length. feeder 10lb main line wtih a 8lb hooklength would this be a good idea then use the feeder for larger bottom feeding carp etc then the float for more general fun stuff. also what is the difference between mono and braid. as it seems braid is stronger but surely you need a weaker hook length so that goes first etc. thanks

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls braid is much more sensitive. it doesn't strech like mono and you get a better fight out of the fish. you can see anything on your rod tip itsthat sensitive. i use 15lb braid for sea fishing and i love it

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls hi I'm not the best darkside angler on here by massive margin but spookily thats the same set up as my rods with the float rod just look at the line weighting guide on the rod( will say max line) but 4lb sounds good the feeder sounds fine as well , and you can lessen the hooklength strengh as well then if required ![]() dave __________________ www.exmouthsaa.co.uk 24 beers in a case and 24 hours in a day simples You won't know unless you go :D...and if you do go!! please let us know :D as thats how the forum thrives

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls pompy. is it a bit of overkill having braid for the hook length when i'll be using mono for the rest of it as surly it's not goin to get the full effect. pingu, which do you have on your float i was poss thinking 3lb with a 2lb hook length so it's a bit more nimble etc.

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls can do only reason i regulary fish 4lb on float is that one of fisheries( kiora) i regulary get hit by 6lbish carp on floay) 3lb should be ok ![]() dave __________________ www.exmouthsaa.co.uk 24 beers in a case and 24 hours in a day simples You won't know unless you go :D...and if you do go!! please let us know :D as thats how the forum thrives

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls hmm might go for a 4 and 3 lb combo then. is braided line better for a complete feeder system or mono as does braid sink better hiding it etc

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls A lot of commie fisheries do not allow braided line, so check fishery rules before u start fishing.

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls I buy the stren braided and use a 10 pound mono below it and can bring in most big fish! If I snag the mono brakes and I only loose my rig! You can also buy a sinkable braid. Most of the spider wire lines float and the wind or current moves the line when bottom fishing! I also like some of the red mono! The braided also has a smaller diameter per pound that the mono!

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls this is an interesting thread for me because ive recently got back into river fishing where i grew up after about 35 years absence. in "olden times" i used to always use bayer perlon but dont seem to see that these days. currently i have some 8lb profish ghost line and 4lb ngt duracast advanced mono. are these any good for river trotting (ive been getting chub up to 4 - 4.5lb and grayling to 1lb) or are there more suitable alternatives ? its all so much more technical these days - i went into a carp specialist shop recently and there was lots of gear that i had absolutely no idea about how you would use.

Re: newbie looking for line advice pls Bayer Perlon MUST still be around somewhere cos' i saw Matt Hayes on about it recently on T.V. (re- it's good sinking properties for ledger/feeder. __________________ Fishing - the best fun you can have with your clothes on.
