Canal Fishing

Hi, I am fairly recent to fishing and mainly fish canals and commercial lakes however every time I go to the canal and use maggots I am constantly catching small fish, then when I use sweetcorn I never get any bites. I also use groundbait. I usually use a waggler for the canal on a 13ft match rod.

Any feedback on what im doing wrong and or what bait to use would be great!

Re: Canal Fishing

I would try useing sweetcorn on the hook and feeding sweetcorn little and often. Also use ur groundbait but small ball about the size of golf balls or smaller.

Also try useing lunchen meat and other meat cat food is good. Lobworm soft pellets and bread are also good baits.

I wound try a session not useing maggots and see how you get on.

If ur fishing by devizes locks try floating bread and ledgering boilies as there are some nice carp to 20lb in that area.

Re: Canal Fishing

ok my main fishing is canal fishing and theres been plenty of times ive caught nothing so at least little fish stop you blanking, what ive found is if i fish over depth at the far bank i catch bigger fish ive just got back from a session and ive had 9 fish all decent size the biggest was a 2lb perch which is a good size and there were bream on the top reckon they were about 3-4lb try mixing some corn, hemp seed, live maggot and castor in your groundbait and roll 4 tennis ball size lumps throw them about a meter apart in a square formation and let the swim rest for half an hour then fish on maggot as usual then keep throwing small lumps over the swim every half hour to keep the fish interested dont worry if you only catch small fish you doin nothin wrong

Re: Canal Fishing

Hi there,
Fished the canal round you loads of times mate.Try pellets....you really need to try the far bank but might be difficult with a waggler.I fish the pole...a black groundbait with caster and worm mixed in....worm or caster on the hook. This will catch you the main species in this canal....Bream,Carp,Tench,Perch,Skimmers and roach.Ditch the corn.

Re: Canal Fishing

Canals are usually not all flat across their width & quite often there is a ledge not far from the bank which drops off then it shallows up the opposite side onto a ledge along the far bank.Allways found that trying to find the ledges & fishing on or down the edge of the ledges to be productive,if your using a float rod then maybe use a plummet to find whereabouts they are. managed to catch some nice bream in the past using this method.

Rob.
