I may be posting in the wrong place - bear with me, I'm a newbie. Just found out I am taking the grandson fishing. I grew up deep sea fishing and have no idea about freshwater - actually the water around here is mostly brackish. By fishing I mean dropping the line in the water - the kid's only 4. I doubt we will catch anything over 8 - 10 oz. He already has a kid's pole, but I spent all day on the 'net trying to find out how to set up a pole with a bobber. I've read about leads, weights, different bobbers, etc., and now I'm more confused. All I want to know is what is the order of the tackle and what is a lead? Is it weights, bobber, lead, hook, (going from the tip of the pole to the hook)? Will someone please explain this - and be kind. It's already embarrassing enough to have to ask this.

Re: How do I set up a pole using a bobber Go to any good tackle shop and ask for some ready tied pole rigs. When you unravel the rig attach the loop on the rig to the connector on the end of the pole. Plumb the depth to make sure that your bait will sit on the bottom of the lake. Take the plummet off and then start to fish. The best bait in my opinion is maggots because it’s universal which means it will catch anything. Sweet corn is a good bait to catch carp, tench....etc Also a good idea is to ask many good anglers as you can, for any tips/advice or watch Matt Hayes, Bob Nudd or Mick Brown on TV.

Thanks for your good advice. I'm such a novice that I had no idea that they came already rigged. I will have to find a popular place to fish so that I will get plenty of advice. Thank you again.

Re: How do I set up a pole using a bobber Sam, I'm taking my 4 year old grandson. A minnow will be a large fish to him. I, on the other hand, am keeping my fingers crossed for me - that is if I get a chance to put a line in the water. You know how grandkids are....reminds me of the Energizer bunny. The little mouth keeps going, and going, and going...

Re: How do I set up a pole using a bobber use maggots as bait or sweetcorn u could use fake sweetcorn thats what gets the big fish because it stops the little fish getting it

Re: How do I set up a pole using a bobber Thanks, New Fisher, any tips are appreciated. As I said, my only experience is salt water fishing and a little fly fishing as a teen. Our bay is brackish, but I only fished it once only for a short time. We were scared off by a very aggresive alligator. Needless to say - never again!
