Eels

Anyone know if freshwater eels will eat saltwater baits like herring, mackerel etc..

I know some will eat coarse species but wasn't sure about the saltwater fish, anyone know?

Re: Eels

bound to, aint they the same type of fish just in different stages of there life
when they go out to sea they turn silver
the 1 i caught a little while ago was still green cause it had just come out of a stream just up drift from where i caught it
and then once back in fresh water they go green again
or at least this is what i thought

I don't see why not .. I mean, you can use sea baits like Herring and Mackeral to catch Pike, can't you?

I'm not sure how good fish-bait is for silvers, though - I tend to favour crab and worm for eel fishing, in particular they seem to like peeler above all else.

Worth a try, though, isn't it?

Cheers,
JB.

Sorry - didn't make myself clear - I meant when fishing in the sea, but to be fair, I don't see why they wouldn't work in freshwater too, but it could be an expensive experiment, unless you gather your own!

Re: Eels

my best ever eel of 4lb 5oz came on a sprat,
when i was a teenager and fishing almost daily i used sprats all the time for pike,
i ended up giving up using them due to the eels getting to the baits first.

a friend of mine who's best is about 5lb swears by herring strips,he fishes almost exclusively for eels and he says that oily baits like mackerel and herring are wonderful baits for larger eels with night time being the best time by far.
