Penn 525 Super Mag

Penn 525 Super Mag Reel

First the official blurb

Quote:
Line Capacity - 275/15
Gear Ratio 6-1
Weight – 18 oz
ABEC 5 spool bearings
Multiple rare earth magnets
Machined aluminium spool
Bearing supported pinion gear

The 525Mag just got better, now SuperMag! The roughest, toughest reel on the beach for long range surf fishing has been up rated. The critical inboard bearings at either end of the spool are now ABEC 5 quality to ensure even smoother casts. And to help maintain control they have been degreased at source then lubricated with Red Rocket Fuel. The magnetic braking system has also been enhanced with the addition of extra magnets to offer a wider range of braking to suit the highly variable conditions experienced on our breaches. Finally, to compliment the gold anodised spool we have treated the power handle to the same gold anodising process.
What I think of the Penn 525 SuperMag

This is a compact light and robust reel that casts like a dream with a high retrieval rate.

Side view showing star drag and free spool knob

Simple to service, with parts being easily obtained.

Although not a cheap reel at around £115 - £125 , the saying of “ you pay for what you get “ definitely rings true here and if you look after this reel it will last you a life time.

The basic of the reel is that it has 4 magnets that you use via a sliding controller so that you can control the spool speed whilst casting.

Slider control

So this means if you set the mags on 8 , they are in full control mod and reduce the chances of your getting birds nests ( on this setting it will also reduce your distance of casting )

And like wise as the numbers decrease then the less restrictions are put on the spool whilst casting.

Why have an adjustable braking system
Well two main reasons spring to mind
1 – The major plus of having a 4 mag system is that it can cope with almost any wind condition Mother Nature wishes to throw at you.
2 - If you’re like me and it takes a few casts to get you into the swing of things then you will find the slider control a great plus as you just start off on say setting 6 and just drop the settings down as you get into the swing of things.

You know when you have a bit of tackle in your hand and it just feel right well the Penn 525 SupMag it this bit of tackle

The good
Great casting control
High retrieval rate

The Bad
I just cannot find anything wrong with this reel

My Rating
Quality 5/5 !!
Price 4/5

Would I recommend It
- Yes

So have you any views on this reel as it would be great to see what everyone else thinks of it

Re: Penn 525 Super Mag

I've got a 525 super mag and it is or was super. Not a single birds nest BUT I have lost the tension nut off the side so I have to get a new one.

I think my grandson loosened the nut and I didn't notice.

I would certainly recommend the reel to anyone.
