Stonefisher Spider Cable

I have been using Stonefisher braided line on my reels for a couple of months now. Just thought I would share my thoughts on it after I have used it a few times in different scenarios.

I first felt the need for braid when I purchased a Bass rod. I wanted a small light weight reel to match the light rod. I wanted to cast up to 4 oz of lead. I looked at the baitcasting reels but thought it wouldn’t be possible to use a leader with the level wind. Then one of the guys at work said he uses a baitcaster with 30lb braid without a leader. Because braid has such a low diameter you can fill a little baitcaster reel with more than enough for close rage applications. I’m also told that it has a higher breaking stain than quoted, notwithstanding I have only cast 3oz with 30lb braid. I was also told that if it’s a round profile braid its fine on multipliers. A lot of braids are oval which causes the line to bed in and causes birds’ nests on multipliers.

When I looked at the price of braid and was horrified. I’m not tight but have 2 kids and a misses to support and £30 is just too much. I then found the Stonefisher braid at half that price. I decided to give it ago. I brought a second hand baitcaster reel from ebay and ordered the braid. I have only used Stonfisher braid so can’t comment on any other the other braids. This has worked a charm for me so far.

With the low diameter of braid you can use less ounces of weight to hold the bottom in a tide as the amount surface area of line in the water is greatly reduced creating less drag. The braid I use is .25 for 30lb and .37 for 60lb. The above pic shows 60lb braid, 15lb mono and 30lb braid.

I fish 2 marks regularly. The first is a pier subject to strong tide so I used to use 15lb mono with a 8 meter leader. The second mark is rough ground so I used 30lb mono straight through. Before fishing each mark I would have to swap the line. I found the best way was to use a drill. I passed a bolt with a couple of washers at each end through an empty spool then inserted the bolt into the chuck of my drill.
I was so impressed with the 30lb braid I thought I would try .37 diameter 60lb braid on my main reels, a Penn 515 and a sl20sh. Then I would have the best of both worlds, the strength for the rough ground and the low diameter to combat the strong tide on the pier saving me the hassle of changing line all the time. I use a short rubbing leader of 1.5 meters plus the trace of 1 about meter so the braid shouldn’t be in contact with the rocks which I fish over.

When I used to haul fish up the pier wall with 8 meters of leader the leader knot used to catch on the tip eye and jam with the fish hanging 8 meters down the wall, I found that to be a real problem. With braid I’m only using 1.5 meters of leader then the trace so can reel the fish all the way up the wall without anything catching. Also 8 meters of 60lb mono leader has a massive surface area for the tide to pull against.

When it gets snagged I wrap the braid around my priest and pull it free, braid would cut through your hand like cheese wire.
On the bottom of my traces I now use a 30lb weak link of mono attached to an upside down Gemini genie bait clip. The weak link holds the weight but during the cast is hooked on to the upside down genie clip when the weight hits the water it slips off the clip and is held by the weak link. Using a higher breaking strain means I have a better chance of getting my gear back.

When I was fishing for Mackerel earlier in the week I used my bass rod and baitcasting reel with a 3oz lead. I was casting quite far trouble free. I got a little confident and thought I would see just how far I could cast with that setup. I wound the mags off and was casting further and further, I cleared the spool down to the mono backing I had on the spool to stop the braid from slipping on the spool. I must have been casting around a 100 meters. I done this a few times then had a crack off. Oops! I lost a fair bit of braid but had a little left on the spool at home. I tied the remaining braid to the spare at home but decided to put it on a fixed spool spinning reel with a knot in the line I didn’t want to risk it on a multiplier. This worked ok for a while but in the end I kept getting wind knots.

I think if you are fishing from a high point such as a ledge or structure into deep water where only a short lob is required braid is great. If it’s a rocky area a short leader is needed. I don’t think braid is suitable for power casting on a beach or fishing a beach over rough ground where the line is at a shallow angle and would catch on sharp rocks.

The bite detection with braid is greatly improved and when a fish is on you feel every knock and pull, its great fun.

breamer is on a distinguished road
Re: Stonefisher Spider Cable

I use braid for all my coarse fishing . I source mine from a company based in the Isle of Wight (Uk hooks ) . When spodding I use a line intended for Marlin fishing ! I use a leader sold by Drennen again targeted for sea anglers . I think its called 'greased wease'l but not sure . To avoid wind knots I always wet my line before casting. I can easilly cast a loaded spod (about 6oz ) over 100 meters with this set up .

Tight lines Breamer
