Cheap boat outfit

Just had my first trip out on a charter and loved it! Rather than paying £7.50 everytime I go on tackle hire, I would like to get myself a cheap set up but have no idea where to start, any suggestion? I would prefer a lever drag reel though.

Re: Cheap boat outfit

Lever drags aint the cheapest, would suggest talkin to a local tackle shop see what deals they have or just havin a browse around the internet for mail order shops and see what they have

Ron thompson set ups are very good value for money i have a RT G force for pollackin which cost me £45 and a RT equalizer for congerin 20-30lb class which was £39 and iv had both for about 2-3 years now and still going strong

Re: Cheap boat outfit

The best advice on tackle is to buy some decent gear, and leave the cheap stuff alone,as the old saying goes "penny wise POUND foolish ".......

hi mate

as with charter skipper i would get something that can put up with the stresses that are put on them by fast currents, tough fish and the general abuse they get whilst out.

see your from southampton so possibly a mix of inshore/uptiding and possibly wreck/drifting.
i think i'd look at a suveran boat combo which is an uptider but a section can be taken out and it changes into a 20lb boat rod....matched with a 7000 size reel will suit most things you can throw at it. just don't skimp on the reel or you'll be buying a new one in twelve months or realise that its not upto much cop and will have to get another one. just to put in perspective i've had the same 7000 syncro for 8 years and its still working like new!!! £100 over 8 years £12.50 a year!!! and getting cheaper each year....

Re: Cheap boat outfit

I have been looking at the Abu BG 7000 Lever Drag reel from Poingdestres for £60. Sounds like a nice bit of kit to me for the money but im not sure. Also found a few nice looking rods, Ron Thompson Zensorflex 7ft 20-30lb class. Would this set up be anygood?

Re: Cheap boat outfit

only advice , don't buy the 7000BG, they just can't handle the battering if you fish hard.

A standard 7000 or a 7000HSN would be more reliable and easy to use, personally i`d avoid the Ron Tompson gear....

Re: Cheap boat outfit

Try a shimano charter special, lever drag, robust and lasts a life time if looked after. Veals have them for £89.99 but shop around.
