Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

I read this in last weeks Anglers Mail. Its for the numbers of Polish people who now live here, as it's their traditional xmas lunch. A shrewd business move by Sainsburys as they can corner a niche market for a short period of time. However, as we're not accustomed to eating it here I doubt whether it would work longer term. I do see an advantage though-If fish like carp are commercially available as food (like it is in Poland) surely this would help reduce the spate of fish thefts that have occurred in the past 2 years? Why steal when you can buy? As Anglers Mail stated, if they are farmed, would it be any worse than eating eating other farmed fish? e.g. Bass or Trout

Discuss.

Rob

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

I have tried Perch and Pike but as yet no Carp! I don't think the wife would allow me to try at home (she won't even let me have a nice cuddly Duck for dinner!). I will have to ask my Friend Jakob if I can go round to his house for some, I'll provide the Vodka he can supply the carp! ( I have a varied taste in food fueled by alcohol)

I saw a pike cooked on River Cottage, didn't look too bad actually. Massive bones to contend with though!

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

It was a long time ago. My mum made burgers from the pike so no bones!
I had Perch on holiday in Australia, roasted with lemon grass. Perch is not bad but can taste a bit muddy!

Cool Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

With all due respect.............
Yes you can buy Bass, Trout etc in Sainsburys but to take these illegally is too much like hard work.
When you look at the number of carp fisheries dotted around the UK - many close to towns and then imagine you are a fishery owner/member/patron,
would you feel happy knowing these fish are on the diet sheet of people who having been deprived in the past suddenly find that sticking a cube of luncheon meat on a size 8 hook in the dark is easier than queuing and paying for roast turkey ?
regards
Doug

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

There is more to it than just catching a Carp and putting it on the table! If you don't prepare it properly it will taste muddy. You have to keep it alive in running water for about a week to clean out the fish so to speak! Unless you can catch one from a nice clean river.
