I read that Polish people keep them in a bath full of water for week before xmas. Now I know why, cheers Biggun. I suppose it makes sense as they're bottom feeders.

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

yep we here in uk are very shy of eating/trying new foods , if it dosent come from the 3 main food groups being :tinned ,frozen or takeaway most parents have no idea what too do so there is more food that is wrapped in cellephane with instructions, unidentifyable bits of something coated in breadcrumbs or you get that must have toy for the kids in with the deal , then we generally wont try

personally when travelling i like to try new foods and have had pike, zander perch and bream in other countries(along with other oddities as goat, bison(best meat ever tasted) frogs(yukk), snails, ostrich, kangarroo, and some chinese meat that i think i know where it came from )

carp were originally only brought to this country as food by the normandy monks for the Abbeys and Monestaries as were a cheap easy food source, thats why there are loads of small lakes called "Stew Ponds" "monks pool " etc arround country

I Do however have issues with poaching/stealing these fish/animals!!!!
Theft is Theft full stop

but unless rod licence stops people taking any fish at all it is often not illegal on many rivers etc(not talking commercial pools here)
netting is becoming more prevelant and that is just totally wrong

But if these varied food stuffs were available via reputable source than fine , (and i would find that I might even be tempted) but the shops will only cater to the majorities so people such as polish and other eastern europoean who have a tradition of carp for christmas will look to find other sources I personnally would not take but sometimes do wonder when you see a fish struggling back after capture weteher it would be ok again (if you understand what i mean there)

this is a very immotive subject and cant believe i have done a serious post for once

please note this is only my view not the view of the management

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

Great reply Dave I've had a think about this over my morning brew and its important to remember that we're all talking about in this thread is supermarkets stocking fish, not taking them for the table. Thats a separate (volatile!) issue. I wouldn't want the thread to be misinterpreted in any way. Carp anglers on the whole take the highest care when handling the fish by using large nets, padded unhooking mats, antiseptic etc. However, if supermarkets stock a certain variety of food then its in the public domain and choice is down to the indivdual.

Re: Sainsburys to sell carp this xmas

I love it

I have eaten carp loads of times, including carp from the muddiest lakes imaginable. They don't taste of mud, they taste fine.

I am going on holiday next week and we will be catching carp and eating it along with the other freshwater fish that we catch.

People who haven't tried carp or other freshwater fish should do so - then they would understand that there is no real difference between sea and freshwater fish - It is pure propoganda cooked up (excuse the pun) by anglers and the angling press who want to put people off the practice of eating freshwater fish.

We are the only country in the world that idolises freshwater fish - Every other country treats them as they should be treated, and after all the only reason carp are in the UK.......... FOOD!

Anybody need any carp recipes PM me.
