Halt all fishing for cod.

There is an article in todays Daily Telegraph,18-10-06,.A group of international scientists are calling for a complete ban on fishing for cod in british waters.
This report will be sent to the E.U.later this week, they reckon the total weight of stocks is approx 53,000 tons--the size of a small commercial ship.
I personally can not see this happening especially the way some tawling is done especially with our continental trawlers,it makes scary reading all the same
They are also wanting a ban on fishing for sandeels tight lines everyone.

I agree with them but it wont happen.
We wont be happy untill weve wiped them out as the Canadians did on the grand banks in the 90s

Re: Halt all fishing for cod.

I saw a documentary on the Grand Banks a while ago - they've had a complete ban on fishing for cod for about 20 years now but it has gone past the point of no return, What few cod eggs that get laid are eaten by giant crabs which seem to have taken over the ecosystem.... and this was the biggest cod fishery in the world for hundreds of years!

If you look at what pass for cod on our fishmarkets now - these would have been called codling not too long ago. I don't hold out much hope for common sense to prevail.

Re: Halt all fishing for cod.

I dived on the grand banks about 2 years ago and actually saw a coddling.
A bit like seeing a blue whale in the solent

If you ever want a very good read about Cod(sounds sad i know)
read "COD,THE FISH THAT CHANGED THE WORLD" very good
