| Extra fish planned for UK rivers Extra fish planned for UK rivers The Environment Agency plans to increase the number of fish in English and Welsh rivers in a bid to improve the natural habitat and boost business. The agency said fishing was one of the most popular leisure pursuits, helping sustain 20,000 jobs in the industry and local economies near rivers. The sport, which generates spending of £3bn a year, has also helped reduced crime through youth schemes, it said. Money from rod licence sales helps the agency manage fisheries. Anglers aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in most rivers in England, Wales or the Border Esk need to apply for an Environment Agency rod licence. Key influence The agency's strategy builds on an initiative in Wales and aims to increase the number of fish in rivers by 2011. "Fisheries is about more than just fishing and our work is a key influence on local economies throughout England and Wales," said Dafydd Evans, head of fisheries. "Angling creates jobs and prosperity, extends visitor seasons and creates more business for restaurants, pubs, shops and hotels." The report also details the "significant" social benefits of angling. One scheme in Rowheath Park, Birmingham launched three years ago introduced children who had been involved in youth crime and truancy to fishing, it said. About 98% of those on the scheme have not reoffended Free from BBC News __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports |

| Re: Extra fish planned for UK rivers They do similar stuff in the States to get people interested in fishing. Many states have a "Free fishing day" (or 2) when anyone can fish without a licence. And a fun thing Nebraska does is release thousands of hatchery raised Trout in city park ponds and other 'popular' water across the state in EARLY spring so the water is cold enough to keep'em alive. The idea is, they are So Easy to catch being 'fed' hatchery fish, they can be taken on nearly Anything, (corn, pet food, earth worms, nightcrawlers, there are even flies tied to look like 'Purina Trout Chow') with the hope that they will all be caught well before it warms up enough to kill them. ![]() __________________ A bad day fishing is better than a good day working! | Re: Extra fish planned for UK rivers A lot of states have 1 to several day permits available for residents and non-residents. Nebraska has 1&3 day and of course annual. Iowa has 1, 3, 7 day & annual. See these: Nebr.: http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/fishing/...guide.asp#fees Iowa: http://www.iowadnr.com/fish/regulations/licenses.html Nope, no neting, they just die off and become catfish, crawdad and carp food. I think the free day in NE is May 20 this year. IA has June 2,3&4. These are the only Legal days to fish w/o a lic. but there are so painfully few game officers, no-one gets checked. I think I've had my lic. and catch checked ONCE in my life. That was at a state park. ![]() __________________ A bad day fishing is better than a good day working!
