Britannia ruins the waves: how pollution and over-fishing are
Independent - UK

Britannia ruins the waves: how pollution and over-fishing are destroying sea life
Fish are changing sex. Species are disappearing as breeding patterns collapse. The food chain is in chaos as temperatures rise, says the first ever major audit of the state of our seas. Severin Carrell reveals what ministers will say on Tuesday about the damage being done to British waters by industry and global warming
27 February 2005

Britain’s seas are seriously ailing and the species that depend on them suffering as never before. The most comprehensive “health check” ever made of the waters around our shores has revealed that, while Britannia once ruled the waves, now it is helping destroy what lives beneath them.

Fish stocks are on the brink of collapse. Species are changing sex because of pollution. Dolphins and porpoises are being killed at unprecedented rates. Water temperatures are rising, and the seabed is being destroyed.

In a disturbing insight into the state of our seas, the government-led investigation has found clear proof that the seas around the British Isles are already suffering the effects of global warming - threatening the survival of fish such as cod and raising the risk of a sudden, catastrophic change in weather patterns.

The study, compiled by the Department for Food, Environment and the Regions (Defra) after 18 months of reviewing all current marine research, found that water temperatures and sea levels are now rising around Britain, while salt levels are dropping because of melting Arctic ice caps. Meanwhile native plankton species - vital to the survival of many fish stocks - are slowly disappearing.

Re: how pollution and over fishing are

Good post,I see it for mysealf first hand when diving.
Huge areas of seabed ploughed up like fields devoid of any life, other areas are covered in rubbish and its very rare i ever see any fish.
The only areas that seem to hold any life are the ones that are to rough to trawl.
The damage i see is only the visible damage, god knows what rising temperatures and pollution are doing ?
You cant really be a fisherman without having an interest in the eviroment,so if your not happy about the state of the seas get onto your local MP,or join Green Peace!

Cool Re: how pollution and over fishing are

We coarse fisherpeople have also noticed the effect that depleted seas are causing. Where once cormorants were rarely seen they now appear to be widespread & growing populations can now be observed on quite a few rivers/ lakes. As the sea life gets depleted the birds start moving inland in search of food.
Its a sorry state & its morally unethical if we destroy the natural resources of our oceans for our short sighted needs today as we rely on these resources so much. As does the planet without the natural balance of the oceans we would not be here today. If we enjoy the bounties the oceans provide why shouldn't our children & what will our kids say to us when they inherit a world completely lacking in bio-diversity???gee thanks!!!can you blame them?
Fishermen are having to go further & further out to sea in order to find fish & they now need to trawl to such deep depths. I read recently that there is enough nets in our oceans to go to the moon & back 8 times! Until we take a look & actually put a price on how much our oceans are REALLY worth to us ALIVE then this annihilation will continue.
Relying on governments to help wont help them because unless you hadn't noticed governments are there to protect governments not fish. We have a choice as I see it ....

short term profit = Fish gone, end of the world (there are no more profits @ all ever!)

or

short term conservation = Profits continue, fish continue, biodiversity continues

When you look @ the options any fool can see what the answer is so why don't our governments?because they are short sighted!!!!They make these stupid rules about fish sizes & quotas so fishermen have to dump undersized or wrong type of fish back over the side of their boats DEAD. Now I don't know much but a fish is a fish is a fish to me & when its dead & you throw it back it wont swim away.....so where's the conservation in that?
Change comes from the top down & when it doesn't the world is on a slippery slope in my opinion....anyway enough doom & gloom I've said my bit, some may agree some wont that's just my opinion....

I hope you are right & it happens before this world is totally ruined.
Anyone figured out who stuffed Mars up?
Wouldn't be suprised if it was our ancestors & the knowledge was buried so we could have a clean start. Nearly 2 down now, but no close neighbour to pop off to this time.

Could religion & the 7 deadly sins have been pointers for the way to live?
I can't even name them all... Greed, Avarice (whatever that is). But i expect I suffer from all of them to a certain degree, yet am still considered a functioning, if strange, member of society...
Anyone claim to be perfect?
