The list, published by the Marine Conservation Society, outlines Fish to Avoid and Fish to Eat and is based on current scientific assessments of fish stocks. Overfishing is widely recognised as the greatest single threat to marine wildlife and habitats. The MCS is advising consumers to avoid vulnerable and overfished species such as shark and deepwater fish. It says retailers should source traditional favourites such as cod and haddock from sustainable fisheries. The most environmentally sound seafood includes mussels, oysters, Alaskan salmon and sustainably harvested scallops (caught by divers rather than dredged). Each fish has been given a rating between one and five, with five the worst, to show which are sustainably and sensitively harvested, and which are not.
