If a friend tells you there are plenty of fish in the sea, don’t you believe it.

Because, if you’re on the New England coast, there may be no New England cod left. The reason? They’ve been fished to death, and what’s left are skinny, little Arctic cod that don’t make much of a meal.

While the oceans appear to have an infinite supply of seafood, it just isn’t so, according to environmental groups like the Sierra Club.

Giant fishing nets like this one bring in tons of fish for fishing boats. But overfishing is leading to the near extinction of several species of fish.



The local chapter, led by Craig Gilbertson, recently heard a fish story that they couldn’t forget. It was told by Pam Blackledge of the Conserve Our Ocean Legacy Campaign.

At war with the ocean’s legacy are fishing companies that use 500 to 600-foot-long drag nets that are baited and pull in everything out there, in addition to the particular species they’re looking for
