Re: is this all they can do is signs

Makes me laugh really, for years the river test (my local) has been plundered by poachers and opportunist anglers looking for a tasty tea (i like mine cooked with orange :-) this practice made no news whatsoever, but once those pesky "immigrants" come plundering our carp, it's treated in the the news like it's the next great plague, honestly who is gonna miss a few carp, think of those happy smiling faces at Christmas with tummies full of something that lives in muddy ponds

Nope only kidding.

Culturally "they" do eat carp and freshwater fish. Isn't that the original reason carp were bought here (cos roach taste cr@p).To be fair why are we so precious about them? You know , other than the fact that pound for pound they cost more that mermaid caught martian salmon and all?

I think there is a HUGE market for farm reared carp, bream and other fish.
What we have got to do is EDUCATE THEM in our ways. If they choose to ignore his education then we need to REEDUCATE them......some of the posters here got that.

People acting in a way that is disrespectful because they do not know are being ignorant and need to be informed of the correct response. Should they then continue with the same behaviour they should be more strongly educated.

Me, I think at least "they" have done something to address the problem, we're all a little quick to criticise but what are we really expecting? We aren't going to see a whole police force telling our Polish friends to put them back now are we?

As with many problems we can either rant and rave or we can take these people under our wings and show them the way we do things.

There are a number of people on the sea fishing front who think that taking one for the pot is OK in moderation. Granted there's a difference in that the sea will bring in fresh stocks (trawler murderers allowing) , there are also some who return ALL the fish they catch.

How many years ago was it that the majority of sharks caught were killed? Now, thankfully, most are returned where possible.

What I'm trying to say is that it is easy to condemn out of hand and say these people shold be sent home, and I do understand why people may feel like that. The question to ask yourself is how likely is that to happen? Nope, not really. In the same way that we have seen influxes of people down the centuries we will stil see these in the future. So what do we do?

Mines.

I'm with greenheart.
Well said BB. I see on the River cottage programe the other evening, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall visited an organic carp farm where they were rearing Organic carp for the table. I thing we should have a few put & take stocked carp fisheries to cater for these people the same as our trout fisheries. Just stock em with table size carp & maybe pike & Zander as these are also popular table fish with our European friends. Maybe surplus smaller pike that are netted out of other commercial fisheries could be restocked for this purpose.

Re: is this all they can do is signs

I work a lot in this area. Wandering Angler, in conjunction with the charitable organisation Reels on wheels has now launched a petition for a change in the law on the removal of course fish in British waters. More information and the petition form can be found here:
http://wandering-angler.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=169

We have already found at least one sympathetic Member of Parliament and hope to force a bill to be read some time next year.

For those who don’t know, we also publish all of the EA rules and information about good bank etiquette in Lithuanian and we are planning to teach catch and release to kids in Lithuania from next year.

I agree with BB, great to see someone rolling his sleeves up and actually doing something about it.

Respect Wandering-Angler, keep up the good work

Re: is this all they can do is signs

These Eastern Europeans won't be prepared to pay for fish to eat! No offence but don't most come here and work for peanuts (to us) grading spuds etc!? they will just carry on taking fish at night or target rivers more...
