Hair Rigs made easy

After fishing Todber Fisheries again, but this time on the Specimen Lake, I witnessed Ian {Greenheart} purchase a pre made Hair Rig. I quizzed him in why he had purchased this and why he does not tie his own. His response was that it was easier than fiddling around tying hairs. This is when I mention does he know how to do the knotless knot, for which he responded that he did not, so I told him I would show him the easiest way of tying a hair rig. On doing so Ian recommended that also post on the Forum to inform people who may also not know how to tie a Knotless Knot hair rig, so here goes.

1. Take your line or braid and make a small loop in the end of the line/braid this will be the loop of the Hair.

2. Next take your hook and thread the un-looped end through the eye of the hook making certain that it goes through eye top of the hook

3. Next set the length of your hair by sliding the line through the eye until the desired length is obtained.

4. Next take the Line/Braid with looped end to top of the shank, then take the other end of the line and wrap this around the shank of the hook starting from the eye to the top of the shank, making certain that the hair length{ the loop is trapped between the hook and wrapped line. I tend to wrap the line around 7 times. However make certain that the end of the wrapped line faces towards the point of the point of the hook

5. Next take the loose end that is facing away from the hook and take it through the eye and slowly pulling which draw up the binding and creates the knot. Remember if you are using line this is the point were you need to moisten the line as the knot starts to form.

6. The final result is the hair rig.

I would like to thank Steve from Wests Tackle in Trowbridge for giving me the Yellow line so i could take the photos.

Re: Hair Rigs made easy

Nice demo Steve.....Mike showed me before but so far I was too lazy to do my own hair rig (as I never used them before, first time when WE fished together)....I will get sit down and practise, as it would come in handy for my france trip

Talking Re: Hair Rigs made easy

Great advice Steve. All I need to do now is pinch some braid & a few hooks out of your box & I can practice tying em. Do they work with Diesel flavour boilies?

Yep, they're a piece of cake when you know how even I tie my own now and I'm the laziest person around. I also bought a little gizmo (can't remember what it is called) that helps you tie neat loops for your hair and ensures they are always the same size (each end can produce a different size loop). Works really well and cost less than £1 I think. Can anyone show the best way for tieing spade ends please?

Buy yourself a matchman hook tyer Pross. I've been using one for the last 30 years & have yet to find a better method of tying spade end hooks. They even make tying size 26 hooks easy. Cost about £3

Re: Hair Rigs made easy

I'll do that, my fat thumbs were struggling to tie eyed size 16's last weekend and I want to start using smaller hooks to target some of the mini species on the species hunt list.
