best bait for perch

hi all,

Just planning my weekends fishing and we are going to a strech of water with some good perch in it.

What would you all suggest as a good bait and tactics to catch a decent sized perch, I do not fancy spinning, the conditions do not look right for it, lots of overhanging trees ( pictures are posted on the river stour at wimborne post).

I had planned on using just maggots and smallish hooks, but having only ever caught 2 perch before, a baby and a 1/2 pounder, any tips would be useful

Cheers

Mike

Re: best bait for perch

Never really tried fishing for them intentionally, so can't help too much with tactics, but in the way of baits: Lobworms, small livebaits and red maggot seem to do best. (Red maggot + maggots seem to attract the smaller perch, so I probably wouldn't use them if targetting bigger perch)

Re: best bait for perch

Half a Lobworm on size 10 hook fished under a waggler works for me!

Re: best bait for perch

i,ve found very effective small lives or lobs worms air inject them if you can get a small syringe and needle this just to lift them up a bit .

as for tactic using any ledgering tactics like paternoster rigs or ledger running rigs use big run rings on them as perch don,t tolerate a lot of resistance

tightlines

Thumbs up Re: best bait for perch

A Small lobworm twiched slowly along the bottom can work well for big perch or try freelining a dead minnow with just a couple of shot to weigh it down. Good luck to you both.

Re: best bait for perch

thanks for all the tips, got my bait on the way home from work all ready for a dawn start on the water, got a load of red maggots and some worms, the sort I have are about 2 inches long and quiet fat and wriggly.

Any suggestions as the best hook size and how to attach the worm for best presentation?? Do I thread them on like ragworm and leave a dangly bit on the end?

Thanks

mike

Re: best bait for perch

Hook the Lobworm through the saddle, as I said I use a size 10 but experiment with hook size. If you are using a half lob hook near the broken end as the amino acids emanating from the worm will attract the perch to the hook rather than the tail end if you see what I mean!

Good luck.
