catching where we do not expect i just read a post that john (gullyworm ) posted up anbd got me thinking about my own expoits and where i had caught a big fish unexpectedly i can think of one or two . but one in particular was when i was driving around looking for some where to go but did not fancy any where and stopped and fished a very shallow drain no more than two to three foot deep and probably fifteen feet wide . i did know that this drain had apparently thrown up some very big fish in the past but on looking at it for the very first time i thought some one must be telling porkies as i did not think it would do a biggy . i had had several other fish during the morning from 4lb to around 11lb and thought that was probably its limit but late afternoon i had another take on leaning into it this was no jack and when i fianlly landed i ended up with 28lb beuty ![]() after my surprised at catching this beast i then thought about it and the date which was march 14th got me to thinking this was probably a spawning area . but still was a surprise in the nicest possible way . have you caught fish from a place that has suprised yourself and got you thinking why it would be where it was ? tightlines kevin ![]()

Re: catching where we do not expect about ten years or so ago,me and a friend decided to fish a small dyke just up the road from where we live,it was full of rudd,we were going to fill our freezers for the coming pike season.this dyke was only about 6 foot wide and 3 foot deep,( its gone now for a new road )after catching what we wanted we decided to do a bit of spinning in the hope of getting one of the jack pike that also lived there, after catching two or three each i hooked into what i thought was another one and low and behold a 4lb 1oz perch ended up in the net, i was totally gobsmacked, it just goes to show you can get some exceptional fish from the most unlikely looking waters.

Re: catching where we do not expect went to fish a shore festival in Ireland a few years ago (I actually won the first day - but thats another matter), and on the day off we had, we all decided to go and watch some guy's fishing for trout...anyway, lots of trout were being caught, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and one of my mates decided to ask if he could have a go..."ok.." said the friendly chap...so my mate baited, and cast his line into the peaceful river....made himself comfortable on his little chair amongst all these reeds and rushes...I was standing behind him, then suddenly..."I've got a bite ...." he whispered excitedly...struck, little bend in the rod..."YES..." he says..."my first Irish trout..."....this fish was putting up a decent scrap on the light tackle and staying deep...."come on, where are ya...?" his voice full of expectation...."there it is...get the net"....."HUH !!!!..." I couldn't believe my eyes, what I was looking at....He'd only caught a........FLOUNDER!!!!!!! - we had travelled 50 miles inland to this lovely trout venue - and my mate's first chuck, he got a flounder about a pound! Aint fishing marvelous.........!
