Question Q. about alligator gars & brim

ok,normally when me and my dad go fishing we go to this place and they got a floating pier...and normally we just fish off it towards this grass growing out of the water cause there is ton of brim there and it seems we get a bite almost every cast-off....but im wandering, what is a decent size brim?? and about alligator gar...i read somewhere they get up to 300 pounds...is that true?! and i seen one woman catch one before at the spot i go to..im not sure of the bait she used...but i read they like fish..at walmart they got these packages of dead bait fish..their fairly small, maybe 3-4 inches? would these work for catching alligator gar? and what else would i need to know?
the reels i got [2..i got my choice between either when i get a new pole]

reel #1

lbs. | 5 | 8 | 10 |
yds. | 300 | 220 | 165 |

reel #2

lbs. | 6 | 8 | 10 |
yds. | 240 | 160 | 140 |

im confused as to which is better..
#1 came off my old rod/reel combo and #2 we bought seperate...on #2 it says gear ratio 5:1:1 and #2 is a shakespeare ranger. would either of these be able to reel in a kinda small alligator gar? and what rod would i need. right now im getting a regular rod [mom/dad's buying so it's got to be under $20 but theres a nice one i plan to get later.its got like the huge rod like u use for deepsea fishing]

as u can see i simply fish for fun..im not much of a "hobbyist" fishing is more of a past time to me..so i dont exactly know all about it..so any help is appreciated
