Dave, To find Gravel bootom or what it is made of try dabbing a bit of Vaseline on the Plummet weight. So when it hits bottom and you bring it back whatever is on the bottom is stuck to the Vaseline. Hope this helps. If you don't use it all....i'm sure you'll find other uses for it ![]()

Re: finding features dave its easy to feature find here is a pic of how i set mine up ![]() the best way to find the feature with out a shadow of a doubt is to use braid as every bump is tranfered to the rod . as you can see from the picture the float is on the end so if you pay line out off the reel the float will rise so if you put a piece of tape on your rod 12" inches from your reel and allways pay line out to the tape you will all way find the exact depth thick weed : your lead will feel solidly embededand will almost immovable your rod tip will go right round and you will feel as if you are attached to a dead weight . snags : your lead will come to a sudden stop and you will probably have to pull for a break. gravel : patches of gravel will feel like running your knuckles over billiard balls you will feel the tremors through your line and your rod tip will keep flicking back and forward . pulling up gravel bars : your line will start to tighten and your rod tip will bend round gently as you move up the slope . on top of bar your line will still be fairly tight but your rod will start to move back to its original shape . pulling off a bar :your line will go slack and your rod tip will flick back as if a fish has just dropped off .your lead will have fallen downm the side of the bar the more slack line you have to wind in the higher the bar is in the water and the steeeper the sides . silt : your lead will feeel as though its being pulled through cotton wool and although there ois no kicks on the rod tip it feels as though you have extra weight on your lead . it will feel hard to pull out and then smooth to on a steady draw back . clear spots in weed ; aftrer a period of plucking ,the rod tip will flick straight back and it will feel like you are dragging your lead over smooth concrete . no kicks plucks or tremors will be felt and the longer this last the bigger the clear spot with practice you will find it easier to identify the different features in time but i hope this will help you dave tightlines kevin ![]()

Re: finding features Yea cracking info that kev. In the old days of sail they used lead and line to find the depth and bottom type. The lead had a hollow bottom filled with gum of some sort when the lead hit bottom they new the depth and and upon retrieval new bottom type. I myself like all types of bottom as long as there female Another piece of useless info while i m at it,,,,they job of depth finding was pretty easy compared to going aloft and pulling on ropes,,,,hence the saying "he s swinging the lead" PS Dont go throwing large lumps of lead and rope into your local pond you may get filled in ![]() __________________ Come on you HULL!
