Smile Re: fly fishing

Mate,

Don't get so anti. Peace and goodwill to all men.

Fly fishing differs from your usual branch of the sport in two main ways:-

you actually catch fish

you can eat them

You are, of course, obliged to say "Me Tarzan, You Jane" loudly, whilst holding up dripping fish, when you get home with supper.

There are loads of web sites giving info on fly fishing, but you won't beat investing a couple of quid in a pukka casting instructor, as recommended by your local fishery owner.

An instructor will set you on the right track.

He'll tell you about what line and when and how to fish them. Give you info on flies etc.

There is a load to learn about flies, colours, size, speed of retrieves, depths to fish etc. All of which is important, but not so much if your line is hitting the water like a depth charge and scaring every fiosh for miles.

Best to have your lesson, and as your paying him to teach you, listen to what he's saying.

Then get out there and catch dinner Tarzan.

Ask how much another hour will be in a couple of months time.

You'll appreciate a sharpen up after a few trips out and his info will mean more.

Best of luck, tight lines and keep me informed as to your progress.

Regards and Seasons Greetings

MalcG

Re: fly fishing

You can fly fish for Carp. But use a rod rated at least a 7 weight. Try a floating line with a dog biscuit or Puffed wheat on the hook.

Feed a few offerings first then cast your fly line into the slurping Carp.... and hold on!!

I suggest that you try a local Trout fisheryfor casting lessons.

One of the carp fisheries near me are opening a fly only carp lake later this year. I can't wait to have a crack at them! :-)

Re: fly fishing

I fish for both Bass and Carp using a fly rod.
I say using a fly rod because when I fish for Carp I use an artificail floating dog biscuit. I had around 12 Carp over 10lb last year using this method. It is fantastic watching the carp just slurp at the biscuit. One thing I did notice last year was that the Carp would often go for the artificial in preference to the real dog biscuit. Maybe it was because the artificial was slightly larger.
I do quite a bit of fly fishing for Bass and Pollock. I like to use a Shrimp imation or a very large blue thing that I make myself. Both work very well. I fish arounf Portland Harbour for the sea fish.

Thumbs up Re: fly fishing

Just PM me if you want some flyfishing lessons Chris, Maybe we could meet up at Sutton Bingham near Yeovil as thats about halfway ish between Newton Abbot & Westbury & is a good place to learn. It's also a very good early season fishery. I usually go there in the opening week.
