how sharp is your hook

well now hooks in all fairness the most important part of are tackle lets face it if you don,t hook it you can not reel it in but how many of us neglect our
hooks i myself will put my hand up and say i,ve not checked or changed my hook at relevant times .and i have to say i have thought back to the old boy on the bank who said to me many years past and i quote : boy the most important part of your tackle is your hook . at the time i thought silly old fool what he know. its funny cause even to this day i still do not do what the old boy preached to me in fact when i am general pleasure fishing i will only change my hook if it gets straighten or if i get snapped up but in my carp fishing its a better ratio i change my hook ( or rig ) after two carp or if i drop a fish for no reason , but in my pred fishing now this is probably because
its my favourite but i check my trace every cast and if there is any probs its changed immeadiatly and i will with out fail change my trace after every fish .
so that old boy was no fool ,but its interesting that the more you are into a species how things are more relevant . so how much do you check your hooks?

tight lines

Thumbs up Re: how sharp is your hook

I check them every time I get a fish or a hang up (I won't say which is the more frequent).
But....your damned if you do, and damned if you don't. With todays modern hooks, many come out of the pkg. chemically sharpened and sharper than you ever could w/ a hook file/stone. They still get dinged so you want to give it a little touch w/ a stone but then you ding the coatings for rust and/or lubrication.
So what to do? I say go ahead and sharpen them. You'll lose them well before rust becomes a problem.

Good fishing

Re: how sharp is your hook

According to this brand of fish hooks from France, that is imported by an Alabama based company (whose fish hooks are HAND SHARPENED to this day), the human hand is the best sharpener, better thjan any sort of chemical sharpening. Of course they are trying to sell their product, but I would not be surprised, because a hand done job is a lot more precise than other methods, though the chemical sharpenig may be better if the hand done hook was not done properly. I have never sharpened hooks. I usually loose them to snags or tooooo big fish before they can dull.

Re: how sharp is your hook

I sharpen my hooks before I tie them.If I change a hook or lure while fishing I still sharpen it before I tie it on.I get lazy after that and usually don't sharpen them while fishing it.
