Float Fishing

I have a couple of questions on float fishing that I hope you knowledgable people can help with!

1. What is a controller float and how do you set one up?
2. How do you set up a float rig for the lift method of fishing? Is it just a case of fishing a float over depth?

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Float Fishing

Hi Mark.

A controller float is used for surface fishing. It stops your line from being on the water and can also help with longer distances than freelining.

With the lift method I think you fish over depth and have a shot on the bottom.

There's bound to be some decent diagrams around on the net mate as I can't explain too well

THere are lots on the market and do not select a to heavy one as itt can spook the fish . I usually us a for foot tail and use leader stop or gum as a stop knot . Form a basic pic click>> Surface Fishing

Stop on just plum your depth then add 12 more inches and but your bulk shot at 9 inches from the hook . Your bites will be different as you will find that when a fish picks up the bait the float will rise up or lay flat on the surface an as the fish moves off so will your float . THis method is brill for tench fishing

Re: Float Fishing

Thanks for the help. Couple more questions slightly off topic but sort of related. Is it too late in the year to surface fish for carp (suspect not as still warm)? How do you fish with dog biscuits? Are they put on a hair rig or softened up and put on the hook?

Re: Float Fishing

The lift method is also excellent for carp fishing, as it virtually eliminates foul-hooking, as the hook is on the bottom

Re: Float Fishing

Using dog biscuits.

There's many ways you can put them on the hook mate, bait bands, hair rigged, super glued, coloured, soaked.

When using a hair rig use a hair that is long enough to fit 2 mixers on. Drill them through the middle and using a baiting needle slide them onto the hair, then you can use a hair stop or find something like a leaf stalk which adds a bit of buoyancy.

Bait bands do the same job as they do with pellets, easy to use once the band is attatched.

If you want to superglue a mixer to the hook get a small saw and go a little way into a biscuit. Add a drop of superglue into the sawed part and then stick to the hook leaving it to set for a few minutes. Be careful not to glue your hands though

Soaking is simply getting a bit of lake water in a tub and then adding mixers, then taking them out when they're at your required hooking state. You could also prepare them this way the night before by leaving them in boiling water for a minute or 2.

My favourite method and 1 I've had a lot of sucess on lately is colouring the biscuits. Get a sandwich bag and put in some mixers. Next thing to do is get some liquid colouring (food dye) and pour a bit in. Blow some air into the bag and shake for a couple of minutes, if there's not enough colouring in add some more, if too much add more biscuits. When done leave til the next day when you go fishing and they are at a perfect hooking state and will stay on for ages! Also gives you a little tactical edge

Re: Float Fishing

Had most sucess on red and green. In my mind the green is like leaves (which I'm sure you've seen carp suck down, I know I do every session!) The red had my dad's pb at 12lb 8oz.

Blue works quite well too, but I had no results on purple. Admittedly I didn't use it as much, but they were taking the other ones more promptly

Re: Float Fishing

I give my dog Bakers complete food and I reckon some of the biscuit things in there would work well. They are all colours, shapes and sizes and there are some quite soft meaty looking bits. I'll give them a bash next time I go, I know they float and expand as my daughter keeps putting them in the dogs water bowl!!!
