Question Drag problem with casting reel

Hi, I've been using my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 reel with Berkley Vanish line for a few days now and noticed a problem with the drag. I am new to casting reels so i'm wondering if it's something i'm doing wrong or not. When I have a fish on the line I turn the drag down a bit for the line to peel so I can play the fish and so the line doesn't break of course but when I turn it down I cannot bring in the line and the drag does not peel. The handle to reel in the line turns fine but the line does not move, the handle just turns and the line doesn't get fed in and even though the drag is set so the fish should peel the line it does not. When I set the drag tighter this does not happen, the line goes in fine but that defeats the whole purpose of what I what it to do. It almost seems like the line is slipping but this reel has an anti-slip feature on it and if I understand right ''line slipping'' is when your whole spool moves even when your drag is tight and that is not the case with my problem. My spool does NOT move at all at the low setting, the fish does not peel the drag nor does the line move when I reel in the line. I'm wondering if I tied the line to the reel wrong or if it's the line or something. This does not seem like line slippage though.

Re: Drag problem with casting reel

Hi Fulgore,

It could be one of two things:

If the reel is new then your mono is slipping on your spool. You will have to remove it and rewind it onto your spool tighter. This can be done on the beach quite easily.

If your reel is not new, then it could be that your clutch washers have got contaminated with oil or grease. Again this is a job that you can do yourself. It is only a matter of cleaning them with surgical spirit or lighter fuel and rubbing them down with very fine emery cloth, or replacing them with new ones.

Cheers

Drew

Re: Drag problem with casting reel

Thanks, Tasmanian Jim. I read that with ''superline'' this happens a lot but never really with mono. I'm using fluorocarbon which from what I see could slip very easily because it seems slippery to begin with. I went to Abu Garcia's website and it said ''to apply a small piece of masking or electrical tape to secure the first loop as you start to spool up. Once you get a few wraps of line on, the tape and the extra friction it provides will hold things in place and your slipping problem should be solved''. It said to do this with like FireLine but I hope it works with fluorocarbon as well. Would you recommend this for me to do or do you think what you said is better? I can't do it now becuase my reel is up at the cottage :-( Ohhh and my reel is brand new to let you know.
