Bowfin (Dogfish)

Has anyone cought one of these bad boys.. I cought a 3 foot dogfish. at dunton park dock here in Holland, Michigan. I was getting the hook out and the dang thing growled at me.. I was like ok what is this.. Then i noticed that it had teeth. i am going this cant be right.. I told my mom about it, and she asked a avid fishermen that she works with and he told her that it was a Bowfin (Dogfish) i never heard of them but there weird looking.. lol

I don't know if you're talking about the same dogfish we have over here.

They're a pest too a lot of anglers, as they tend too catch so many, but others love too catch them.

Me...I've never caught one

Hi Dan,

You're quite correct the American Bowfin/dogfish I've only caught in freshwater. They fight fairly well (dogged), can live for quite a while out of
water and have horrible teeth. Taste terrible - even the local darker coloured community won't eat them! Normally caught when fishing for catfish using chicken gizzards/livers for bait etc. I've caught a real big one - but that's another story.
