| Re: Target Species Quote:
![]() I don't really have any real targets but If I catch any double figure Barbel or 2lb-plus Roach & Rudd or 3lb-plus Perch or 1lb-plus Dace from my local stream; or 9lb-10lb-plus Tench or 25lb-plus Carp or 3lb-plus Crucian Carp from our Estate lake or the other waters that I fish then it will just be icing on the cake; as I know they are occasionally caught in the waters that I currently fish and are not too far out of reach. My current target is to christen my new Harrisons 15ft trotting rod with a few Barbel on my local stream using my centrepin. I hope that everyone has a successful year Keith (BoldBear) __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

| Re: Target Species You can see most of the species I target at http://cnre.vt.edu/efish and www.roughfish.com Boldbear, I wish you tight lines as well, as you've got some nice goals... Good luck! As for the species I'm targeting, here's some info for those who are curious or bored... Suckers are a family of fish very closely related to minnows. When they get big they look very similar to carp. This family includes the buffalo fish (3 species: black, bigmouth, and smallmouth), carpsuckers (3 species: river, highfin, and quillback), hogsuckers (northern, Roanoke, and Alabama), and redhorse (approximately one standard metric crapload of species, including but not limited to the river, golden, silver, black, blacktail, sicklefin, notchlip, pealip, V-lip, shorthead, smallmouth, greater, robust, Apalachicola, and Mexican redhorse). We have 3 species of freshwater-only temperate bass (the family your bass comes from) that are native to inland waters (white bass, white perch, yellow bass) and one species from the salt that has been stocked into many an inland lake (striped bass). We have five species of pike, including the northern pike that is familiar to UK anglers. There are also the muskellunge, chain pickerel, grass pickerel, and redfin pickerel. Our gar are different from yours. What you call a garfish, we call a needlefish. The jaws and teeth are similar though. There are 7 species (longnose, shortnose, spotted, Florida, Mexican, alligator, and Cuban gar), 5 of which live in the southeastern US where I live (longnose, spotted, Florida, shortnose, alligator). The sunfish family includes perch-like fish, including the largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, flyer, warmouth, northern rock bass, Roanoke bass, shadow bass, and Ozark bass. We have two species that are similar to the zander. The walleye is well-known throughout North America, while most people have never heard of the sauger. Goldeye and mooneye are in a family all their own. They look like a cross between a herring and a trout. Shiners are very similar to dace. They're low on the food chain but easy and fun to catch on light gear. It looks like sometime between June and August I will be taking the wife and the daughter to Disney World. There are more lakes there that a well-prepared man can fish than there are drunk guys in the local bar/pub when there is a high-profile sporting even on TV and the beer is almost free. There are loads of sunfish and cichlid species, as well as a few catfish and gar in said lakes, including one right behind our hotel...... __________________ 2012 species: 13 All-time species: 65 New species caught in 2012: white sucker, popeye shiner, white shiner |
