What are your winter fishing plans?

The cold has finally hit us and the warm(ish) autumn has meant plenty of extra days on the bank for many. I have not been out much lately but have a pike fishing trip planned for Sunday and I am itching to get the rods out again.
One of my favourite times to fish is during the winter months - getting the stove out for bacon sarnies during a pike session, walking the banks of the Tees or Swale catching beautiful grayling or hard fighting chub or hitting the stillwaters before they freeze over and fishing ultra light for roach and perch.
What are your winter fishing plans for the coming months?
Are you a fair weather angler or do you like to get cosy'd up under the brolly or bivvy and put in a cold weather session?
Do you change your methods for the winter season - from carp to pike or from stillwaters to fishing the wintery rivers?
Do you fish the winter match scene where its ice breakers at the ready and a bag of winter silvers?
Or do you prefer to stay warm indoors, cleaning and repairing your kit or making up rigs and researching new tactics ready for Spring?
Look forward to hearing what you all get up too

Re: What are your winter fishing plans?

I still look to get in as much fishing as work , family and the weather allows. Having joined a club that allows more night fishing as a matter of course, I will be barbel fishing a lot. Will also look for at least a couple of floaty maggoty sessions on the Severn for roach and on the Teme, proabably for grayling. Some pike sessions too. So , the methods and amount of bait changes , the catchs usually go down but I find that the time spent honing skills in the winter gives me more confidence when the warmer weather rolls round.

Re: What are your winter fishing plans?

As I am getting older my winter fishing has started to wane a bit, a shame really as I always loved fishing in the winter months when I was younger.

However whenever the temperature rises a few degrees I will get out long trotting on my local stream trying to catch a few decent sized Roach and Chub and do a little lure fishing for Perch plus I will still try to catch a few Barbel if the temperature is not too cold.

But if there is a bitter cold northerly wind or there is any chance of rain sleet or snow then I will be staying at home respooling my reels, cleaning my rods and getting my Tench tackle ready for spring.

Re: What are your winter fishing plans?

Oh thanks BB I was trying not to think of tench. . . . . by far my favourite summer fish, hence why I failed to properly recce the Severn this year, too busy after the olive ladies..

Re: What are your winter fishing plans?

My plans are to go out in about an hour and catch nothing apart from some weed. No need to wish me luck, recent trips have shown that I have become somewhat of an expert in this.

I might get my fly rod out around February time and try to improve my casting skills which are about 'Nil' at present.
One of my clubs has a Fly Fishing section and a couple of decent trout lakes where I could learn.

I have always fancied catchng a Carp or two on the fly rod, I bet that's really exciting.
