Re: You usually get what you paid for so beware of some cheap reels.

Well you two, Northern eye and Old Git..your really lucky to have reels and other goodies past down from your Dad. I have seen some of the workmanship which has gone into making these reels and I look in pure amazement.. can anyone give me an example of that sort of craftmanship in todays manufacturing ??. Anyway I never got anything past down to me coz my dad was in the army and mi mum couldn't for the life of her remember the regiment.. although we always had gallons of gold top milk, but no fishing bits.. oh well. Not quite, the rod my dad had, was made from greenheart wood, hand made by my dad, to bloody heavy for me, and his reel was an 8" bakelite centre pin, so not great gear is always handed down, he did however introduce me to fishing, both course and sea, and was always eager and enthusiastic when we went, which was passed down to me, and I did the same with my lad and 2 daughters, they all still fish today.
my grand children go out with their parents, so a little savvy and skill has been passed on for their generation.
