Re: New To Fishing

Hi mate, welcome to the forum. Carp and Pike fishing are not my cup of tea, but there are a lot of real enthusiasts on this forum with a wealth of knowledge. I've no doubt you'll get some excellent advice very soon. Kind regards.

Re: New To Fishing

Welcome to the forum. For starters you can generally fish for pike with the same rod and reel you use for carping. A decent, mid priced carp rod with a 2lb test curve will be fine for casting out deadbaits and teamed with a suitable baitrunner reel you can happily give both forms of fishing a go. Line the reel with no less than 10lb line or even 15lb if your fishing big waters where the fish grow big. If your just fishing for non-specimin carp in small waters, you wont need to go as strong as 15lb line. The tackle shop will advise on a rod and reel set although you can get cheaper kits elsewhere if your just wanting to give it go. Carp rigs are on sale now, ready made, so probably best to get a few of these to start off with until you learn to create and build your own. Look online or in fishing mags for rig and bait ideas or just ask your fishing mates what they are using. An unhooking matt is advisable to protect the fish on the bank and a good sized, soft mesh landing net. I couldn't advise you on bite alarms as I tend not to use them although the ones I have are cheapo Stillwater ones and they have always worked fine when used. For pike fishing you will need to get a few essential items of tackle. Wire traces are a must to stop the fish biting through the line. Again, you can buy them ready made with hooks and swivels and these are OK for a beginner and a couple of sets of forcepts, long and short for unhooking and protecting your fingers. For both forms of fishing you will need the usual selection of leads, floats, beads, stops and snap links - ask your tackle shop to help you select whats best. I also think a handy little item to have when pike fishing is a set of shringes. These can be used to pump the deadbait up with either liquid attractors or simply air - the air makes the bait float which is always more attractive to the pike as it makes the bait visable off the bottom, its eyes are on top of its head which makes baits laid on the bottom harder to find. The main thing to remember is to respect the fish, treat them with care when caught and during handling or weighing and go out and enjoy your fishing! Good luck.

Re: New To Fishing

carp mat ,couple of 2.75 to 3.00 tc rods dead bait is heavy personlay i think 2.00 a bit light for chucking deads two bait runners not essential as i fish for my pike open bail arm on the reel , you could get a couple of good reels from ebay secondhand ,as northern eye said forceps are a must and a good set of electricians wire cutters for cutting difficult trebles a large landing net rem pike are long so dont buy small you might need a few floats and to quote northern eye again a good tackle shop will put you right ,go with some 1 who knows how to handle pike well as they have sharp teeth with anti coagulant on them wen you get cut the bleeding takes ages to stop ,as i learnt as a nipper got two great scars from gilling a 15 pounder out once after watching them do it on tv lol wen you get a decent size carp dont hold it above knee level saw some one drop one on the deck the other day keep them low to the ground same with pike ,on the subject of syringes be careful if you stick yourself and air gets in your hand it could be r i p time ,,i use foam inserts for popped dead baits as my nipper comes with me i wouldnt want her ketching the needle in her hand ,,good luck
