Knowing When to Pack Up

How do you decide when it's time to pack up.

It's something I find really hard, especially when I've got no particular deadline or something I have to get home for.

I don't like to leave if I still have bait left and I find that the 'three more casts' or 'one more fish' methods don't work either. If you don't catch anything on the three casts, you have to just try one or two more. If you do catch something, then you wonder if perhaps you're on a streak or a shoal has arrived.

I have to say, the deciding factor with me is often that it gets too dark to see!

Re: Knowing When to Pack Up

Most of my fishing these days is done on opportunistic late afternoons and evenings where I get there about an hour or two before the light starts to fade and fish up to an hour after dark or in the winter when the temperature starts to plummet.

But I usually have around three or four ‘last casts’ before I finally give up.
It's surprising how many fish I have lost because I have been packing away my gear while leaving my rod cast out till the last and I was not ready to strike properly.

doesnt work for me lol

If the weed is a pain or the weather prevents me from actually fishing then i will grudgingly pack up and think of an alternative venue ..
If im catching fish or down somewhere like Abbotsbury i find it hard to want to pack up .. a job i don't really like anyway as its synonymous with going home

I guess its different for shore anglers - i'm not sure i could sit at as lake for 4 hours staring at the opposite bank
