After my first day fishing

Iv'e went out and bought this earlier today, http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...%3EFISHING.htm hard work getting it back from newcastle with no car, lol.

Wondering what you guys think for someone starting out fishing. Is it an alright buy? looks good to me, the rods feel..metal, is this normal? Anything else im going to need? Gave the trolley to my step dad as i can carry everything with ease. Thanks,

Peter

Re: After my first day fishing

It'll get you started and at a good price. Decent bait and end tackle will help though. Bait type and presentation is the key. I caught my first few carp (up to 16lb) on very cheap gear but felt the need to upgrade quickly. As a package it looks more than capable of doing the job.

Re: After my first day fishing

If you fix the reel to the rod (you only need the bottom half if in two/three sections) then thread the line down towards the reel and tie the line around the spool. You can then start to reel in the line but make sure you keep some tension on the line as you reel it. A good tip is to get a damp towel and hold the line with the rod and try and keep the same tension throughout. Don't over fill the spool as it will just fall off into a birds nest when your next fishing, I think about 3 to 5mm from the lip of the spool should do it.

Re: After my first day fishing

I've read drop the line into bucket of water for tension. Good idea?

Re: After my first day fishing

I usually get the wife to hold the spool with a pen through it but she usually burns her fingers on the revolving line spool and I have to make her a cuppa to keep her friendly LOL....
Otherwise I pass the line through one of those big old telephone directories to give it tension.
Dropping it into a bucket of water is also a good idea.
