Re: tackle shops

Generally I'd agree with you, especially one's which put 15 of the same leaflet and 5 crap dvd's in with your mail order to bump up the weight to meet their maximum p+p prices which I have experienced from so called one of europes biggest tackle dealers.

Occasionally you find a diamond in the rough, my local is one, always helpful and reasonably priced.

Unfortunately we all need them at some point for the essentials, I guess its the old saying use them or lose them!

Re: tackle shops

We had 3 tackle shops in the town. My usual one closed down last year which was a shame because they were very helpfull and had been going for years so I tried the other 2 out - and then I realised that their prices were alot cheaper, bait was better quality and they were even more helpful. I think it's good to have the tackle shops, things may be cheaper online at times but you don't get to handle or get advice on the rods, reels or poles before you buy which is a must if you are buying an expensive item. I like to mix it up, some things I will buy online and other things I will go to the tackle shop for. Every Saturday I call in and pick up a few bits, have a chat with the people in there and drool over all the gear that my bank balance says no too - support these shops, they are getting thin on the ground nowadays!!

Re: tackle shops

Just to add: I do think worms are a rip off from the tackle shops - Why pay that much when you can dig em up from the ground!!! I have the smallest patch of soil in my back yard and its full of the little wrigglers!!!

In ths day and age There is nothing to stop an angling shop from getting a presence on the web even if it is in a list of tackleshops on a site such as FishingMagic which can advertise their shops whereabouts and opening times with a couple of sentences about their shop including a map; they don't even need any computer skills plus it is free;

Or they can have their own web site for a quite a small sum where they can advertise the tackle that they sell; this can make all the difference as most angers today have searched the web for tackle shops in their area even if it is just to find out the number to call so that they can find out if something is in stock and look at alternatives before they visit the shop so that they don't have to waste their time and petrol.

Two of the 3 tackleshops near me have a web presence and are doing ok but the third who doesn't want a web presence is having a much harder job to survive.

If they are not aware of what the other shops sell and for how much, then they are unlikely to be able to sell at competitive prices and will be usually struggling to survive as most of their customers seem to have a PC or laptop nowerdays.

Re: tackle shops

Rarely bother with tackle shops, its far easier to do it all on-line.

For example I drive past Fosters of Birmingham daily. Popped in Friday and they didn't have the bait I was after (that was on their webby) and ALL the end tackle is behind a huge counter. I like to have a gander through the bits and bobs and I cant do that there.

Plus it is not a cheap shop anyway.

Prob wont bother with it again unless I'm desperate.

Re: tackle shops

I use my local tackleshops in preference because I like to handle the tackle before I pay for it but It is much easier if the shop has a web presence as well, which is fairly easy to have these days and doesn't cost the earth.

Re: tackle shops

One of the shops does most of its trade on the web and is always deserted and the other is a big match scene shop so is always busy with the match guys - go in there sometimes and it's like a social club - good crack though!! Would be missed if it ever closed.
