Re: Centrepin fishing

From what i know of centerpins, which isnt much, theres no adjustable drag control , apart from your hands. You have to control the speed at which the line is allowed to spool off when trotting a stick / chubber, down a river and also control the drag pressure required when you encounter a `run`. Practice makes perfect ( im still practicing). Good luck

Re: Centrepin fishing

Looking forward to the practice ...i think mate.

One thing i am stuck on, i will be loadeing the pin with 50yrds of line, as you should for best results.

But how do i know when i have 50yrds on the drum?

Is this were i need to know the circumferance of the pin drum and count the turns of the handle to get desired lenght of line on from the new spool

Re: Centrepin fishing

Just do the loop cast. Pull 2 loops of line from the bottom 2 rings on your rod and combine this with an underarm swing with the spool free running. If you want to get further out use 3 loops or even 4.

Thats all i used to do mate, also where i am going i dont need to cast to far, but when the session gets slow i think i will give the wallis a go for a bit of practice.

Re: Centrepin fishing

Good luck with your Centrepin, Its great fun and well worth the effort of learning how to cast properly with the wallis cast.

I often use one for Barbeling on small rivers and streams when I am trotting an avon/stick/balsa and for rolling meat along the bottom or fishing a static link leger and I thoroughly enjoy using it.

Its also ideal for fishing the lift method for Tench and for margin fishing for Carp in stillwaters.

Centrepins do sometimes have a small adjustable drag which you can use to slow the line release down and hold back the float if that is what you want however I don't use one, instead I use my thumb if I need to hold back a bit. They usually also have a ratchet which I use either to stop the reel turning when I move swims or put my rod down or as a bite alarm when fishing on a stillwater.

What Centrepin have you bought?

Re: Centrepin fishing

Hi Keith, the pin i got is a Marco cortesi, not one of the best ( £36 ) but now i have used it i am tempted to get another, one for the lighter lines and ones for heaveyer stuff. If i like using them i mite just spalsh out on a Adcock or similar.

I have used it mainly on still waters and have caught as in the pics below, last nite i tryed a very slow river but even with a 4 swan chubber and 3 ld line but line wouldnt reel off, mite need a faster water. Going to try some real rivers soon.

My recent catchs on the lift method on good old bread and corn.

Goes to show we dont need all these method rigs and pellets
