First time fishing with the boy

Hello all, im taking my 6 year old on his first days fishing in a couple of weeks. Thought i would start him slow. Got him a small rod and reel and am planning to take him out for the morning , or longer depending on how he likes it etc

Anyone recommend a good place for him to start? river or lake dont mind.

Think it needs to be fairly bush & tree free and welcoming to kids. Dont want to spend three hours untangling line from bushes and trees and 30 minutes fishing. I live 5 mins from junction 6 M25 and dont mind driving for 30/40 minutes.

Thanks

Re: First time fishing with the boy

Hi Mick,

Welcome to the forum.

I’m afraid I live in Hertfordshire just a few miles from junctions 22 & 23 of the M25 so am not familiar with your area so other than suggest the Thames around Kingston, Staines or Runnymead I can’t really help you much.

But welcome to the forum, hopefully there will be someone closer to you who may be able to help you.

I hope your son catches the fishing bug and it stays with him all his life, it's a great bug to catch.

Tight lines

Keith (BoldBear)

Re: First time fishing with the boy

Hi Mick. Looking forward to taking my son on his first fishing trip too, he only 5 months so be a while yet. I would choose a place where he is going to catch fish, a good mixed commercial would be a great start, somewhere with good facilities/toilets. Get him half a pint of maggots and he will have fun catching roach and perch all day and might even get a few surprises. If you go to a river and its not fishing well and he blanks he may not be interested in going again - he can learn all about fishing rivers and hard waters later on. Go onto Google and search for fisheries in your area - i have done that and was suprised what places there were right on my doorstep. Good luck.
