ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

Just noticed ALDI have some fishing gear on sale again from 29 May. I note they have a fly rod n reel, for 20 pounds. Might be worth buying for someone who wants to give fly fishing a go. It doesnt say what weight rod (or whatever terminology you fly anglers use), as I was mulling over whether to get it for pike fly fishing, or floater type fishing for carp. Some boilies, pellets and groundbaits for sale too..not sure if they are any good or not

Re: ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

I just saw that lot too, the reels are probably similar to the Avanti ones which were 2 for £5. They are made of a plastic material which doesn't strike me as too sturdy so I haven't used them yet.

I doubt the line will be any good but you never know, I did buy some line from Aldi in the past but again have never used it to date. The floats may be ok though if they are as they look in the picture, normally crystal wagglers are around a quid each and there is 5 in a pack for £2.99.

I might give the polarised glasses a go but other than those and the floats I will probably give the rest a miss.

I usually steer clear of fishing gear from Aldi/Lidl but I once bought a 6m telescopic rod from Lidl as it wasn't all that expensive. I have used it a few times but it is pretty heavy but can be useful when wishing to fish stick float across a wide river.

Re: ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

went there today
polorised galsses at £3.99 seemed cheap enough and ok so got 2 pair as keep loseing anyway

and did a fly rod as well as will prob be once a year it gets used if that and for me its better than £50-60

its a 8.86 foot rod ( love chinese decimal feet ) with snake guides whatever that is, 6/7 reel and 24 m floating line forward line and 5 funny looking flies( no lead weights or size 3/0 hooks though )

now to learn some leader knots
for what i need and use sure will be fine

Re: ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

Sounds like a good buy.

I bought a second hand Fly rod about 10 to 15 years ago because I had seen John Wilson catching Carp on one using small floating dog biscuits and it looked great fun, however I never did get to try it and the rod has been on the wall in my tackle shed ever since.
I bought some flys too.

One day I’ll have to get it out and have a go.

Re: ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

Nice one Dave - you will need to get up Tiverton Canal sometime and try out the fly rod for pike and perch - Count Zero does it often I believe. I didnt make it down to ALDI's in the end - but glad you managed to get some stuff.

Dave I use my 6/7 weight rod all the time on the Canal for the pike, you just need to use a smallish pike fly. At the moment though I am using a 3/4 weight and catching the roach and rudd up there its absolutely cracking fun. Myself and a friend must have had 20 rudd of a pound or more on saturday and he had a roach of 1lb 9oz!
If you ever fancy trying it give me a shout. Baz has my mobile number.

Re: ALDI - fishing gear 29 May

bought the polarised glasses last year and still have them they have had a fair bit of abuse usually travelling in the bottom of my tackle bag and i used the line as well 10lb fishing for carp and landed a nice 13 puonder without to much fuss although i did notice it wears badley and quickly wouldnt keep it on the reel for any longer than 2 months streches a lot as well tight lines
