| After 25 years I finally fished for the first time last Tuesday – Me and the Mrs spent 5 days at a log cabin site in Wales with a stretch of the Irfon running through it, I had posted “Advice on fishing the river Irfon” but realised that you can only Spin or Fly so that option was out. Here’s how it went: Tuesday – Spring Water Lakes http://www.springwaterlakes.com/ Arrived about 10.00 and set up a feeder rod, I had tried to buy maggots and fortunately couldn’t get any so I opted for worms and a decent ground bait mix, 5 minutes later I landed a nice Bream to a couple of pound and was well chuffed. Over the next 4 hours I had further Bream, a lovely little Tench and some Roach. Thursday – same venue & method. What a day, fished the same method and ramped up the ground bait with some pellets and other goodies, the weather was a bit damp and windy but I persevered and I’m so glad that I did. I was almost immediately into a decent Common Carp that gave me a great fight, managed to land it after 10 minutes and it was a good 5lb or so. The next cast I was in again with another Carp which I unfortunately foul hooked but still landed – again 5lb or so. Over the next several hours I had a few good sized Bream to around 3lb and capped the day off with a Tench that was over 5lb; the guy fishing the next peg even came and asked me for advice as he hadn’t caught (on the maggot) – that made my head swell and I gave him what was left of my ground bait when I packed up. Friday – Celtic Lakes resort - http://www.celticlakesresort.com/ £15 for a day ticket!! It looked a lovely venue and I was certainly buoyed by the previous days fishing, got a whole lake to myself (number 5) and eagerly set up my gear – maybe a little too eagerly as I managed to mess up my umbrella spike so I had to hold onto it when it rained – which it did – a lot! Had my first fish after 10 minutes – a small Bream to about 8oz quickly followed by what appeared to be a Rudd and then a Roach. That’s all I managed to land losing 5 at the net. I had never fished with barbless hooks before and my inexperience showed. I got many tangles due to the wind, rain and lack of knowledge but still enjoyed it thoroughly. I’m now back in love with fishing, hooked even and am off to Alvechurch fisheries on Saturday for a few hours. All the best. | Re: First trip for 25 years Great report, and well done. The lakes you fished look great - must be nice to get away from it all in a log cabin for 5 days too. |

Here's the link to where we stayed http://www.victoriawells.org.uk/ - it was some 25 miles away form the venues I fished but the cmp site was an excellent stress buster with decent food and a bar!! As I have said, there is also a stretch of the Irfon running through it and I intend to return next year when the coarse season is open and give that a shot too.
